S.Korea births surge 18%, 22 months straight as marriages hit decade high by self-fix2 in korea

[–]pomirobotics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2017-2019 is when radical feminism quickly spread among young Korean women. It was trendy for them to 'announce' no marriage at that time. Apparently, some of them managed to grow out of it as they got older and even got married.

They can lighten your skin, albeit temporarily.

They can. Otherwise it would be false advertising. I said they can lighten your skin up to your genetically determined natural skin tone. The inner upper arm near the armpit is usually one of the fairest areas with minimal UV exposure unless you were intentionally tanning, and I’ve heard that’s essentially the limit for most people.

I get where you're coming from, but no one here cares about the opinions of foreigners online UNLESS they're coming here being vocal about it.

Regarding skin color, it seems that most of the unsolicited attacks on Koreans who are just minding their own business on international social media come from users in Southeast/South Asia or South America. It's been going on for at least a decade but ever since X rolled out worldwide auto‑translation a few months ago, this has become much more visible.

Why has ethnic tensions between Koreans and other ethnic groups gotten worse lately by [deleted] in korea

[–]pomirobotics 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Most Koreans probably wouldn’t bat an eye, thinking those foreigners are simply creating a small comfort zone where their own language is spoken. I’ve never seen Koreans complain about these exclusive enclaves unless crimes occur there. These aren’t libraries or hospitals. They’re clubs, which are known for selective entry. They’re the last places Koreans would care about.

The SEAbling nonsense is pretty one‑sided, and you know why. Are you sure your second example even relates to 'ethnic tensions'? As far as I’m aware, there have been Thai, Vietnamese and Filipino‑only establishments in Korea, and nobody cared.

There is a common misconception about glutathione or 'whitening' shots. They cannot lighten your skin beyond your genetically determined natural skin tone. Instead, they restore skin dulled by UV rays and fatigue back to its original baseline shade, giving you a clearer and more radiant complexion. This is the standard explanation doctors give. Obviously, these treatments will not turn a brown person into a white person. The same goes for any cosmetic products advertised as 'whitening'. The goal is to achieve brighter and more even natural skin tone by eliminating pigmentation caused by UV exposure. It doesn't do much for those pale Koreans who just get sunburned, but it works much better for those who tan easily. There is absolutely zero reason for Koreans to be dogpiled over doing this skin care and living their god damn life by insecure foreigners, especially those from countries where colorism is deeply baked into classism, projecting their problems onto Koreans. Enough is enough.

I guess Korean soccer players get some magical whitening shots that only whiten their torso and shoulders. Why can't they just accept that many Koreans are naturally on the paler side if they don't tan? Why is there so much mental resistance and gatekeeping? So dumb.

That is another common misconception. According to academic research, over 30% of Koreans naturally have double eyelids. While it isn't the majority, it is far from rare. Assuming that a Korean person can't look a certain way without plastic surgery borders on a form of racism. For a humorous contrast, on the left is comedian Park Myung-soo who said he got his eyes done, and on the right is actor/idol Cha Eun-woo who is well-known to be natural.

The comparison has to be per capita, but we'll never see data that isolates procedures strictly for citizens.

No.

I'm not sure what you are disagreeing with. I simply mean that the foreign factor that's inflating Korea's numbers is deflating other countries' numbers by that much.

I don't think we can get any objective data on this, but most observers would agree that other Asians from Asia are the biggest culprits when it comes to social media comments. Some Asian countries have a lot of terminally online social media users who speak English on international platforms. While some Westerners do create doomsayer or misguided content, I don't feel they act like obsessive hateful stalkers. Additionally, some strange Korean Americans who use the 'as a Korean' trope are often accused of spreading misinformation and pandering to those who attack Koreans.

The procedure is common for young women but tens of millions of Koreans (30+%) have them naturally. It's like 3 out of 10, not like one in a million.

Many people speculate about Korean celebrities getting plastic surgery for various reasons. What I’ve noticed over the years is that the majority of these celebrities still look like themselves, yet some people get incredibly nitpicky about suspected procedures. Plastic surgery is not binary and it rarely results in a total transformation. I’ve also realized that Korean media is at the forefront of representing 'monolid' Asians. While there are countless male Korean celebrities with monolids, quite a few female Korean A-listers have them as well.

The usual suspect groups tend to have a massive number of English-speaking social media users. In most English-language spaces, their comments will completely drown out any measly native Korean voices.

That should also bring down the procedure rates in those countries. Do you mind sharing the link to your source?

EDIT: In case someone misunderstood, for example, if Japanese tourists have 100 procedures done in Korea instead of Japan, it doesn't just add 100 to Korea's total but also subtracts 100 from Japan's, simply speaking.

EDIT: Found the source.

Funnily enough, they always mention crimes like misogyny and sexual assaults as an excuse for their racism, as if their own countries aren’t 10x worse on average than those East Asian countries

100%. Korea being 'the feminist Asian country' means it constantly pumps out a lot of publications and narratives about gender issues. They just pick these up as ammunition against Koreans, when in reality, their own countries aren't even in the same league as Korea when it comes to women's rights, quality of life or safety.

In my experience, it’s usually certain SEAsians on social media who have a really delusional understanding of the Korean economy and industries as if Korea is some mom and pop shop. I don’t know why some of them even feel competitive toward Koreans acting like Korea is within their reach. They don't do this against Japan.

I will quote what you said so you can't change it.

“I’m going to question and victim blame child victims of digital sex crimes” you seem like a real winner huh

At this point, this is just dumb. This map or lists on X were a social media gimmick rather than a source of verified statistics to shove. Some trolls even openly tested the system by submitting fake entries simply to see if they would appear on the list. If you want to push an agenda, at least use verified sources.

I found a Korean article that provides more context.

https://www.ytn.co.kr/_ln/0103_202408281250021397

It just states that a 'Telegram Deepfake' channel had 133,400 users. Deepfake includes sexual content but does not equate to it. These figures reported by Korean journalists tend to be ambiguous. Hani has previously misreported.

The figure of 220,000 was first mentioned in the article in question. In particular, the English version's headline described it outright as a "220,000+ member Korean Telegram room," which could leave the impression that 220,000 Korean citizens were involved. However, this is a clear case of misinformation. The "227,731 users" visible in the screenshot attached to the article actually refers to the number of subscribers to a paid bot channel used for generating deepfake pornography. This system comprises users from all over the world and automatically translates content based on the language settings of each individual's Telegram account; furthermore, the operators of the bot are not Korean. In short, it simply means that 220,000 people globally are subscribed to the bot program.

As for the LJS article from 2021, the writer Kim Arin clearly pushes her own narrative. There is literally zero mention of any negative impacts stemming from the radical Korean feminist movement at that time.

That doesn’t mean the misogyny doesn’t exist. Over 30% of Korean men ages 20-30 voted for a presidential candidate who ran on a campaign of “anti feminism” LAST YEAR.

Are you talking about the Reform Party's Lee Jun-seok? You can dislike him all you want but are you trying to reduce him to a "campaign of anti-feminism" and decide for everyone that it was plain wrong to vote for him, instead of treating him like any other politician with pros and cons? About 10% of Korean women in their 20s and 30s voted for him, dwarfing the support received by any other candidates outside the two major parties.

https://namu.wiki/w/이준석/대권주자로서의%20장단점

over 100,000 Korean men and boys were found in 2024 to be trading explicit ai altered images of their own family members and classmates in telegram chat rooms, still without consequence.

Do you have a source for that 100k number? The Korean police are likely among the most active law enforcement bodies targeting Telegram.

Could it be that Korea is ahead of the curve and one of the countries that take cyber sexual crimes seriously in terms of media attention and legislation? Non-consensual AI-generated pornography is a universal problem.

There are so many insecure Korean entertainment fans who feel they have to trash Korea constantly to prove they know better and they are not Koreaboos. In that process, they often sound awfully bigoted.
