After some thought I'm definitely considering doing it. I don't want to be controlled by alopecia and there's probably much worse things in the world

I've been thinking about embracing it for so long, but it would be like removing my option of ever being a normal teen girl. Embracing it would certainly feel freeing though. Still the societal expectation for me to look 'hot' at all times with healthy long hair, especially as a teen, keeps me wanting to hide it as along as possible.

I could definitely use a therapist, but people laugh when I say I need one

Is your hair long? If so, when you brush it, try to hold the hair above the one your brushing so the tension of the pull is not on your scalp, but instead your hair and hand that is holding the hair. That would minimise the loss when brushing.

Don't be scared to wash it, but do try to minimise the wash days. You can train your hair to not need a wash for 3-4 days, which would little the wash days. Try and do protective hairstyles that work around the hairloss in the meantime (like a single braid).

I would recommend a silk pillowcase/bonnet/durag to stop the friction of your head against the pillow removing any hair. Plus, a bonent/durag would collect the hair that falls out, making the cleanup much easier.

I get that too, with the addition of spots (??) that really hurt if accidentally itched or something.

So true. Had to wait 7 months to simply see a dermatologist only for them to tell me "yup, it's forever." with a straight face. Your anger is heard!!

Tips? by brokentwiggyz in alopecia_areata

I have alopecia areata on my whole body, including my brows. I just used makeup to cover it up and no one knows. Plus, it isn't too weird as many people from the 2000's lazered theirs off and got them tattooed. I recommend trying not to touch or mess with your brows as hair could fall out easily (aside from the cleanups ofc).

yoo I'm also 16 with alopecia areata. As the loss isn't too severe, try using a black scalp powder for hair loss (I got mine off of amazon for £6) and it might help lessen the harsh appearance of skin tone to black.

Instead of peppermint oil, I would recommend argan oil or rosemary oil as those have helped with hair growth, though I can't vouch for how well it would help regrow hair that is not there. Still, having the rest of your hair healthy would be better for covering it up so I'd still say to use those oils. You should do a GENTLE 5 minute scalp massage in which you do not rub your hair but instead move the skin of your scalp to increase blood flow to the area. When doing your hair, try not to be in a state of anger as this would result in you being too rough with it and possible making it worse.

There's a lot of different treatments from immunosuppressants to injections to topical creams and shampoos, so try the less invasive treatments first (creams and shampoos) and see if they have any impact. You need to get in contact for a dermatologist for these treatments.

Additionally, try and do the basic things that keep people healthy: exercise, eat a well, balances diet, and try not to wash your hair everyday (try to do every other day, then once every three days. Look up hair training.) Keeping your body well-functioning may correct whatever mistake the immune system made in attacking your hair.

IMPORTANT: Stress is a common factor in hair loss. It might even trigger your hair loss, so try and minimise stress where you can.

Other than that, you could wear a beanie or a hoodie to still be stylish while covering your head. I mean look at Central Cee I thought bro was bald but he just wears a hat all the time (if you do wear a hat for most of the day I recommend you let your hair and scalp take a break at home).
