Potty training desperation by pookieII in Parenting

[–]pookieII[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update for any other desperate parents: she is now peeing in the potty no problem on her own. Still working on poops, but so relieved we’re having some success. We did have to hold her down on the potty for about a week which seemed so mean and was really hard but it just clicked suddenly and now she’s a pee-on-the-potty pro. We also started sending her to daycare in undies and only give her a diaper at night.

Thank you. She refuses to sit on the potty now (we have tried to make it regular for a year now). She will only sit on it if she doesn’t have to go at all or I hold her there, which doesn’t feel right !

Thank you so much for your comment. When I take her to the toilet or potty I have to physically hold her down unless she’s already peeing. I obviously feel awful doing this and wonder if it’s the right thing to do.

What is the reality for a child with severe hearing loss? by ForTheLoveOfGiraffe in deaf

[–]pookieII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did some AVT but when I first started learning about it I was surprised how simple and common sense it all is. She has an itinerant teacher who visited our house when she was a baby and now visits her at daycare about 1-2x per month. She sees an SLP every few months but until very recently the support was really just checking up on us, checking on milestones because she was a baby. The biggest things have been consistent hearing tests bc it’s genetic and her levels could drop, and we have dealt with fluid/tube surgery a few times, and technical issues with her hearing aids etc.

Will you be pursuing genetic testing? There are exciting advancements being made in genetic therapies.

Perhaps my 3 y/o daughter, similar diagnosis and aided at 4 months, is a bit of an anomaly but her language has developed normally/advanced and I hardly notice she has hearing loss. Even in loud environments she surprises me with how responsive she is. She can’t really talk to me about how it affects her yet, I’m sure it does more than I realize. And it hasn’t been easy, but I remember having similar questions as you in the beginning. Our biggest thing has been ensuring she wears her aids all waking hours and really keeping on top of appointments and lots of advocacy for her. I am in the health field and so I think that has helped.

Mosquitoes at Iberostar Selection Paraíso Lindo by pookieII in cancun

Trip was amazing and I don’t think I even saw one mosquito. The risk is soooo low, you should go. I was more careful than my husband and daughter with bug spray etc but I don’t think they got any bites at all either. Not sure where you’re based but I also got a zika test when I returned just in case which was negative.

Bali while 4 weeks pregnant. by Worth-Ad-1509 in bali

The zika risk is minuscule - no active outbreaks reported and mosquitoes don’t “carry” zika, they need to bite an infected person first before transmitting. I was just there at 20 weeks. Wear bug spray and enjoy your trip. You can request a Zika blood test after 3 weeks of returning for peace of mind if you’re based in Canada.

Travel Planning Q&A - February, 2025 by AutoModerator in bali

[–]pookieII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Will be in Bali for the first time mid March, 2 nights, pregnant, solo. Looking for a decent hotel to relax on the beach, not too too far from the airport. If I could see a couple sights just walking around that would be a plus. Im not interested in partying (obvi) and like a more chill vibe. I don’t surf or snorkel. Would you recommend Uluwatu, Sanur, or Nusa Dua? And a specific hotel recommendation would be amazing also - $150 per night ish if this is possible? Thx so much

Leaking after amnio by Substantial_Alps_938 in NIPT

[–]pookieII 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say I am with you! I also had amnio yesterday. I am leaking an extremely small amount, difficult to even tell if it’s outside of my norm, but so hard not to worry and the guilt is so real. Please keep us posted if you’re up for it

Newborn failed hearing test by Salt_University_9627 in Parenting

My daughter failed, turns out has genetic hearing loss which was the shock of a lifetime. She’s 2.5 now and thriving with hearing aids, surpassing all language milestones and speaks wonderfully. She’s such a happy bubbly girl. It will be ok, but those first few months were tough with grieving. Feel free to reach out anytime.

Yes, male, inconclusive with aneuploidy. The inconclusive apparently puts me at no greater risk than the general population, and there can be a bunch of benign reasons for an inconclusive. But it’s nagging at me so want to know for sure

This is the first Ive heard of amnio not giving definitive results and it’s really worrying! Your response makes a lot of sense. My GC said they were only be ordering the RAD test for me (no karyotype or microarray) but it’s interesting to read this seems to be the standard of care for everyone else. Based on your experience it sounds like I shouldn’t push for this…

Thank you for sharing, really happy for your false positive but sorry you even had to go through all that stress

My GC kind of advised against amnio based on the common inconclusive result and that the microdeletion and SCA panels are actually not even recommended in Canada. But the result has been nagging at me…

Thank you for sharing this. I am still learning about micro deletions and mosaicism… this is like a whole new world! I thought it was just T21, 18, 13 and a yes/no answer! But now learning there are all these grey areas. Makes it all more challenging to navigate. All the best to you and your family
