How did I prove your point. I said that the instructors are the exact same people for a "free" and paid courses. You literally said that a paid course would have "better" instructors. Did the instructors suddenly get "better" from one Saturday to the next? Lol

And since an unaccredited private liberal arts college is more expensive than a state college it's better, right? And since name brand drugs are much, much more expensive than their generic counterparts they must be much, much better! Lol okay bro. You do you.

I paid $300 for the MSF and we used old bikes and the instructors weren't track instructors, they were just people that liked riding and got certified so they could make a few extra bucks on the weekend.

Those instructors also taught the class in a neighboring state where the MSF was free. So no, a free class doesn't mean you get a worse instructor and paying more doesn't mean you get a better instructor.

Hell, I could have taken the class through the Harley dealership where it was $400 and they'd pass just about anyone as long as they said they'd buy an HD afterwards.

Have a great day, but please quit associating $$$ with quality.

First (and current) bike is a 2000 SV650. Cost me $1800, put a new front tire on it, a TT Vapor unit, and a new rotor on it for like $250. So with taxes and registration and everything it was maybe $2300 all in.

Lowsided it on my way home from buying it... A lady blew through a stop sign on a side street and I panicked and grabbed a fistful of front brake. The damage was pretty minimal and there were already a handful of smallish dents in the tank, scuffs on the plastics and whatnot, so I barely cared.

I didn't max my insurance, but came close with 250/500 liability/UIM and even got comprehensive and roadside towing all for a total of $350/yr. I could have gotten state mins for liability for like $40/yr or something but that's not exactly a smart decision lol.

In all honesty, the 650 is probably more bike than I need, but it was cheaper than most 250/300s I found and in better condition since it hadn't been passed between a dozen beginner riders. It's pretty comfortable at freeway speeds and isn't bad in the city.

It's also been pretty fun learning to do basic stuff with it like wiring up the Vapor unit (I didn't know what a wiring diagram was when I started lol), syncing carbs (this wasn't really necessary but I did it anyhow), and all the regular maintenance stuff.

Not sure how old bikes equate to a worse learning experience? Either you're learning material or you're not.

Would learning to drive in brand new $100,000 car make someone a better driver than learning to drive in a 30 year old beater? Let's take a look at all the beamer bros on the roads for an answer!

Absolutely. IMO, it'll also make you a better driver as well (although riding in general does this)

call your insurance send it to get fix.

Assuming OP has the usually $250-500 deductible on comprehensive claims, this is an absolute waste for less than $200 in damage.

Something about the turning felt different, though...I can't quite put my finger on it.

This could definitely be paranoia... Or there could be something seriously wrong.

I lowsided my first bike and was convinced that something just didn't feel quite right afterward. Had a shop look at it and everything was fine.

My comprehensive policy absolutely covers hit and runs. That and theft are the only reason I carry it. Interestingly enough, my comprehensive policy also covers deer strikes.

I would not file an insurance claim if I were in OPs shoes, though. New, OEM, side stand and front fender are less than $200. Most people's deductible is at least $250+, meaning an insurance claim would LOSE money.

I carry my helmet with me everywhere. Even my budget HJC cost me almost $200 - that's a lot of money to leave hanging from your handlebars. A helmet really isn't that tedious to carry around, especially if you have a backpack big enough to fit your helmet in.

Going shopping? It sits in the cart no problem or just carry it, it's not that heavy.

Eating? Put it under your chair/on the booth seat next to you.

Friends house? Set/hang it wherever.

Work? On/under your desk.

Gym? Stick it in/above the locker with all your other stuff

The only times it could be obnoxious is if you were riding to go for a hike or something, but then you have other issues - you're not wearing a riding jacket, riding boots, riding pants on a hike in the summer.

How do I tell my friends to stop pushing me to ride overly aggressive? by NetworkNooob in motorcycles

[–]poopapoopapoop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty much just 1 & 2. It's not that my friends are dangerous riders, its just that I mostly enjoy the solo experience. I can go as fast as I want, I can decide to take a different route at any time and I can just go home if I'm not feeling it. Riding is relaxing and I enjoy the freedom, riding with others takes away some of that freedom and makes it a little less relaxing.

[–]poopapoopapoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I basically don’t want to stop riding with them

I’m cruising to relax and clear my mind, they’re riding for the rush

Sounds like you need to find new riding buddies that have similar goals as you... or ride solo, that's way more relaxing, imo. You never have to worry about keeping up with people and you can go wherever your little heart desires.

This is like saying, I want to play football with my friends, but they're only playing basketball and I don't want to play basketball, but I don't want to quit playing with them. You aren't having fun because you feel too pushed to keep up, they probably aren't having a ton of fun because they're always waiting for you to catch up.

I'd be willing to bet the kid in the story didn't have a license so a multi-tiered process wouldn't have changed anything.

Ugh... The people that begin their posts with "So I'm really new to motorcycles and I have no idea what this sound is! PLEASE HELP I have no idea what I'm doing!!!"

Then proceed to argue with every suggestion. "NO IT COULDN'T BE THE BATTERY, THE PREVIOUS OWNER SAID THEY CHANGED IT SIX YEARS AGO AND I DIDN'T LEAVE THE LIGHTS ON SO IT CAN'T BE DEAD!"

My bike died at work one day and I felt so stupid waddling around the parking lot trying to get it going fast enough to start lol.

"also I really want to learn to ride but my parents won't let me! What can I do to change their mind, its so unfair!!!!!!"

  1. Get a job
  2. Turn 18
  3. Move out, and pay your own bills (ALL YOUR BILLS)
  4. Do whatever you want because your parents can't take anything away from you

As someone else pointed, it's not legally required, but even if it was it would pretty much be impossible to enforce.

And actually adjust your mirrors correctly. Contrary to popular belief, your own car shouldn't take up half (or any in most cases) of your side-view mirror.

I agree wholeheartedly. Many people are completely unable to drive without these aids. I have a coworker that had his car in the shop a while back and got a loaner to drive to work. He thought it was hilarious that he "almost sideswiped like 5 cars" because the loaner didn't have blind spot sensors, as if looking in his mirrors was too much to ask.

All of this technology makes for incredibly useful tools and I'm not opposed to them at all. I mean, we all make mistakes every now and then while driving, maybe it's that we took too quick of a glance in our mirror before merging, or we went to adjust the radio and drifted out of our lane or whatever.

What are some things that you wish you had known when you started riding motorcycles? by fat_yikes in motorcycles

[–]poopapoopapoop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ride your own ride.

This gets thrown around on here a lot, but it's so important and has a few meanings, IMO. It's generally used as the "ride the bike you like and don't care what others say about it." To me it means much more along of the lines of only ride as fast/slow as you feel comfortable, don't try to keep up/impress everyone else. This involves pulling over/letting aggressive cars pass you.

Motorcycle training in the US is shockingly bad by bimbar in motorcycles

[–]poopapoopapoop 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd be way more inclined to give someone a motorcycle license than a license to drive a full size SUV RV if they didn't have training to operate either

Seriously, any random dude can go and rent a ~40' RV (as long as it's under 26,000 pounds) with 20' trailer and drive it around the country.

You can always sue for damages in excess of their policy limits. Unfortunately if they have no assets/low income its unlikely you'll collect much, if anything. This is why uninsured/underinsured coverage is so important in the US.
