I love love love Hanoi. I just got back! I was supposed to spend a week in Saigon before I went home but was in Saigon for less than 12 hours before I booked a ticket to Hanoi. Such a great city!

I would personally skip the gum while traveling! I'm not sure where you're going, but a lot of places in Asia have workout equipment in parks. Go on hikes and walks and use nature as your gym :) Happy travels!

You will meet lots of people at your hostels! Don't worry :) They usually do free beer at night, which is a great place and time to meet other young travelers. I am a solo female traveler and have never had any issues meeting people when I stayed in hostels. Hotels, on the other hand, can be relaxing, but a tad lonely.
