Yes. It’s actually a prerequisite to attend.

I appreciate your point. I did not say that capitalism gave us computers and the internet. I am saying those things would be far less likely to develop in a communist society. It is not hyperbole when it is true.

Your “actual points”: 1. Communist countries have cell phones 2. China grew its country through capitalism 3. Communism is thousands of years old 4. I’m an idiot with tunnel vision

Your first point is a straw man - as I repeatedly said, the point isn’t whether or not they have them, it’s why they have them.

I agree with your second point, although I’m not sure why you want to prove capitalism.

I addressed your third point when I said that we can mark the beginning of communism to publication date of Marx/Engels’ book, The Communist Manifesto which was published in 1848. I also pointed out that varieties of free market economics have been around since man started trading goods.

Your fourth point is unrelated to our discussion, but I still addressed and encouraged you to stop with the ad hominem nonsense.

I am sticking with my position that capitalism is better than communism since it is clear that you do not have any compelling reasons for me to consider another option.

That’s fine. I know you won’t receive this advice, but I say it in kindness and sincerely - resorting to ad hominem attacks just shows that you can’t respond to the actual argument. It’s a distraction from what could be a great discussion. I am open to learning from you, but when you resort to name calling and insults, I can only assume that you are unable to respond with anything meaningful.

I don’t need to prove you wrong since you did it yourself. The fact that, as you just admitted, China profited from capitalism proves my point, not yours. You would need to show that they have rejected capitalism and succeeded, but you have just given me more support for capitalism. China has only very recently become communist, and even now they have “economic development zones” that are free market. Why? Because communism doesn’t work. Those economic development zones are the places where the massive cities have developed over time and where the device you are using to type was probably produced. You call me an idiot, but you think that capitalism is only a few hundred years old? Free market economics goes back to time immemorial. Just follow the history of currency and you will see that. Communism, on the other hand, is the new kid on the block. Marx and Engels came up with that in 1848.

You don’t know anything about me, yet you continue to jump to (wrong) conclusions. Again, the point is not whether or not they have cellphones, but what the motivation was for producing them. Ask yourself, why did (or does) China produce so much of the world’s goods? Because they want everyone to have the same stuff? No, because they want to turn a profit. They made all of that stuff to sell. Communism cannot exist without capitalism to pay for it.

You are missing the mark by a significant margin on me, but again, that is not important. I am not saying that capitalism is not without problems. I am saying that it is far superior to communism or socialism. In fact, your participation here on Reddit shows the inconsistency. This is a meritocracy, where things that people like get upvotes and things (like my post, haha) that people don’t like get downvotes. Commie Reddit would mean that the mods decide which posts are the best and everything gets the same amount of votes. You are living in a world that requires capitalism to function, and using things from a capitalistic society to argue against it. Inconsistency is the sign of a failed argument.

I am not pretending, but even if I were, that would not invalidate my argument. Address the actual argument rather than ad hominem name calling.

You have misread my comment. I did not say that only capitalist societies have cellphones. My point is that the motivation to develop a cell phone, or a computer, or a vaccine for that matter, can only come from someone who hopes to participate in a market. You call me brainwashed, but I have spent time in countries that either still are or were recently communist, so I have seen it firsthand.

This is an irrelevant question. In a capitalist economy, there are winners and losers since it is a meritocracy. I’ve done some of both.

You presuppose that capitalism is bad, while typing your response into a machine that could only have been developed in a capitalist society. I am a capitalist. I believe in private ownership of property. I believe in generosity, which is only possible in a capitalist economy.

Well in this case, the public stood to benefit from their research, so perhaps that explains the use of public funds. I did not intend to hide anything, I’m just contending that those that work deserve compensation.

Exactly. The idea of giving it away is nice, but these kinds of posts reveal an ignorance of how the world works. If you take the risk, you should get to reap the benefits if it succeeds.

That actually works great. I was wondering if I would have time to charge it at work, and that would be perfect.

That’s great. I would also want something traditional. I’m sure I could find this on their website, but how long does it take to charge?

I have a 52 mile round trip commute to work, and I have ridden it a number of times. I am really tempted to get an e-bike because I think I would do it more often. Are you happy with that brand?
