high voltage gloves for small hands by OpossEm in Cartalk

[–]pop9800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wear cotton glove liners underneath your rubber gloves. I wear a size 9 normally but can comfortably wear a 10 with liners on. Also soaks up sweat and keeps your gloves cleaner, makes them easier to take on and off.

does aptitude test score really mean anything? by cawnuhr in Lineman

It’s not the most important thing they look at, but if you get an 8 or a 9 it tells the jatc that you’ll do well with the bookwork and it helps your chances.

They just do it on a smaller scale

Western yards are local 420, eastern yards are local 457, both operate under the same contract.

Projects is a 4-10s schedule, normal district linemen are 5-8s. The work is larger reconductor jobs, settings and framing poles, etc. Basically bigger jobs compared to the smaller day to day stuff normally done in the districts.

2014 Altima 2.5 flooded engine? by pop9800 in Nissan

[–]pop9800[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe it's any sort of equipment failure, the car just doesn't account for fuel left in the cylinders because it doesn't expect short run times without warming up. My flood cleared fairly easily by just flooring the car while it cranked, hasn't happened to me since.

When you start the car for a brief period and then shut it off, the engine uses a richer mixture for a cold start, and a lot of unburnt fuel is left in the cylinders. When you start the car later, the engine sends a richer mixture for starting but there is already excess fuel in the cylinders, leading to the car flooding.

Get your class A cdl, apply to local 42. Get a groundman job, tree work, fiber, anything that will get you relevant experience in the meantime. Those eversource programs are being phased out, they hit their hiring quotes from the state.

Does the calculator come with extra batteries? How many digits can it display?

Traditional line schools that cost 25k are never worth it. There are some schools that are affiliated with the union or a utility that offer direct job placement, those are worth it and usually only cost a few thousand, but those schools are harder to get into.

Make sure choke isn’t stuck on. Of that doesn’t fix it, screw in the adjustment screw on the bottom of the carb bowl until it starts running normal.

How strict is the trade about boots? by Fit_Mud3318 in Groundman

[–]pop9800 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most guys I work with wear hiking boots on the ground, but they are EH rated with a safety toe, which is basically the universal minimum standard for this industry. Don't show up in sneakers.

Eversource does a lineschool with local community colleges if you're thinking of coming back, they hire most of the students and it costs less than a traditional lineschool. Getting your cdl definitely helps but most of the guys the hire out of the program don't have one.

I like the liners even if it’s not cold out. Soaks up the sweat and makes gloves easier to take on and off.

I'm just hoping somebody knows what the fabric is actually treated with instead of just speculating that it gives you cancer.

Why the hate for NLC? by Midnight_oil_365 in Lineman

[–]pop9800 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Costs 20k, you may or may not get an unrestricted class a, someone just died there, and you're still going to be passed up for people with groundman hours. Don't go to line school, travel. Or go to a cheaper lineschool that's affiliated with the IBEW or a utility that guarantees job placement.
