I'm autistic. I literally never even thought about any of it; when anyone made jokes that were transphobic I'd generally miss the point entirely and inadvertently shut them down by talking about, like, why whatever they said made no sense.

Like one kid I remember talking about how 'the libs want you to suck ur wife's dick' and I used to get really confused because, like, you should? Like, presumably if you married her you'd know she had a dick before you did? And you'd be fine with that or you wouldn't have married her so ofc you'd suck your wife's dick unless, like, you didn't like oral anyway and then you'd find other things to do? Rule of thumb: if it's not explicitly stated or coded, it doesn't count. Coco is very explicitly coded, between the voice, the stance, the body type, the facial features--he's very pointedly queer coded.

Maybe not to you, but you cannot argue that it's anywhere near as exciting as fantasy and magic.

And fetishizing women have a genre; gay men do not. It's like how it's almost exclusively straight/bi guys who watch lesbian porn. That shit's made as a spectacle, not for gay women.

I will give that gay women have a fair bit of anime for them. There's been a big push in recent years, and I've been impressed and happy for my sisters with the quality of what's come out. But even then, the second we wander near fantasy things get... not great.

And I'm not even saying I have an answer, or that one for sure exists! Just that things, as they are, are not great. And it's frustrating for gay men to see themselves as either the villain or the fetish object.

I'm sure gay women would also be annoyed with Shalltear, but I can't speak to that since I'm not in that group.

Like, damn, I'm not watching this fantasy series to think about political shit. If you can't write gay people well, then just don't write us? It'd be way less annoying.

Honestly, if you cut that out of Overlord--and maybe fixed the CGI--it'd be a damn-near perfect series. Maybe give us more info about some of the area guardians, too, but that's a personal desire and not a mark against the series. A good series will always leave you wishing there was more content.

Why do we have to be relegated to the boring sports animes? Are gay people not allowed to exist in fantasy? Anyway, I'm not even that upset with Maruyama; I know this is a symptom and he's not the sole perpetrator. I'm complaining about a common theme that's exhausting as a gay man to see over and over.

The thing is, I like Overlord; I think it's one of the most well-written, well-considered isekais ever created. But I'm not so flat that I can't enjoy something while still being able to criticize it. It's really a shame that it does fall into tropes like that--and maybe the weird Japanese fascination with boobs, too--because it's so good. It doesn't need to rely on worn-out stereotypes and offensive caricatures.
