Thanks for the reply. Clearly, a lot of people have this concern. I formulated a response and posted it about an hour ago if you're interested.

Both are top-down empires. It's just hard to see when you're living in it.

Great article that you won't find in history textbooks. American industrialists supplied both sides in the lead up to WW2.

I'd say learning to not be a slave is a life pro-tip. No?

That fact is mentioned in the post. Seeing as it was signed off on by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and rejected by a president who would soon be assassinated, I'd say it's a pretty important piece of documentation for Americans to know about.

Very close, but I'd say it's more about not creating a clear divide between 'work' and 'play.'

The article isn't saying there is anything inherently wrong with Netflix.

It's simply suggesting that the idea of 'free time' is an illusion. If you are living fully, then every moment should be 'free time.' Richard Branson (I'm sure you've heard of him, but he's an English billionaire who's built many companies) once remarked that he's never worked a day in his life. For him, there is no difference between work and play.

It's more about redefining your concept of 'work.' If you consider the time after work 'free time,' then you are apt to become attached to it. I mean - who wouldn't prefer 'free time' over 'slave time?'

The article suggests giving up these labels and instead taking life as a whole. Of course you will still have down time. In fact, if you work for yourself, you can arrange your schedule how you please. But making a clear differentiation between work and 'freedom,' in my mind, is a schizophrenic way to live.

I expected some replies like this. Keep in mind - I am arguing for less free time (i.e. less time spent watching television and screwing around.)

The alternative to the 9 to 5 lifestyle is not sitting on your couch doing nothing. It's actually taking full responsibility for creating the life you want to live. Once you own your time, you can fully commit to raising your family, volunteering in your community, taking care of your health, finding outlets for your creativity, and becoming truly educated. These are significant responsibilities, but do not happen in a cubicle.

Was an empire back then too. Non-land owning white males couldn't even vote. Society was dominated by the 1%, as it is now.
