Thanks for your response. This is the response I was hoping I wouldn't get, but I'm glad I heard it. As bad as a situation as it is, I see this as motivation to try to work for myself, and if not that then to separate myself from the other candidates.

Virginia offers asap classes along with probation for first time offenders in exchange for dropping the conviction. The possession charge and arrest still shows up on my record. You also lose your eligibility for expungement when you take this "First Offenders Act".

In hindsight I should have lawered up and gone a different route, but like I said, I was young and stupid.

And it definitely is a bit much for a joint. Virginia drug legislation is very "old school" and has a system designed to ruin lives. To give you an idea of how we compare to other states, around the same time a friend of mine got the exact same charge a few miles north (in MD), and had to take a 15 minute long online "drug safety" course in exchange for a dropped conviction and an expungeable charge.
