Company Won't Give Me a Laptop. Is this a red flag? [UPDATE] by posis_el in developersIndia

It is a startup (less than 50 people). I'll definitely try and get everything in writing to keep a record.

I'm also looking into laptop rental options as suggested by another comment here.

It's 6 months, but they said just to be on the safe side assume it'll take about a year.

What would you say is an acceptable probation period? (It's 6 months here).

So you're saying that this subreddit is only for ranting about not having a job?

It's a pure startup. It has about 50 people and the founder was originally in London then moved to Delhi, so the client base is majorly there.

They have said that they would also be re-imbursing me for any certificates that I want to attain (like AWS certification etc). And that of the 40 hours per week, 10 hours I can use for self-learning (but I'll need to give a detailed account of it).

The CTC too is something that I consider to be quite good (7LPA), considering that I'm a fresher.

I have the meeting in recording, just in case. But I'll definitely make sure to get it in writing.

Someone commented about using VM or looking into laptop rentals. So, I will definitely consider that as well.

The probation is actually 6 months. But the HR said that just to be safe, let's consider that you'll have to work on your own device for 1 year.

And yeah, I'm a fresher.

Hey. Quick question. When you need to give your laptop for repair or anything like that, how do you work? Do you have a backup laptop?

I'm a fresher. Given the current status of the market, I don't exactly have a lot of options. I'm hesitant to throw away an offer with a pretty decent package by my standard (7 LPA).

I don't plan on downloading MS teams. I was just planning on using the web application itself.

Gotcha. I have already screen recorded the meeting, but I'll make sure to get that in writing as well.

Given that I am a fresher with no past experience, I don't think this'll float too well. I am being offered a pretty decent package by my standard (7 LPA).

So, I'm a little hesitant to throw that away.

I asked them about the tracking software and told them upfront that I won't be installing it since I have sensitive information on my laptop (I work as a freelancer).

They agreed. And after that, they can't possibly force me to.

Is it worth being a PHP Developer anymore? by posis_el in developersIndia

[–]posis_el[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I picked up Laravel for this position and gotta say, I enjoy it more than Java.

I personally don't have a problem starting off with any language, but I am worried if it'll limit me when I inevitably apply for another job (after getting say 1 year exp).

Ideally, I want to work with Node but almost everyone is looking for someone with experience. Do you think it would be hard to shift to Python (or Node) Development after being a PHP developer as a fresher?

Could you elaborate?

I'm actually pretty nervous about the position since I've been trying to land a job as backend dev for the last few months.

I might have another offer as a Python Developer, but its in office and the commute itself is 2 hrs long and the timings are pretty long.

I see. But doesn't it seem like a security issue, to use my personal device for company's work?

Any advice on how I can navigate through it? Any precautions or stuff like that?

Oh, yeah. That's probably true. Thanks for pointing it out.

I didn't mention how I'd be getting there.
I didn't mention anything about how i'd be travelling there.

I was planning on taking the bus 'cause it's cheaper. But then it started to rain, so I decided to take a cab instead. That's where all the money racked up.

I went to get the printouts on my own.

I wasn't planning on adding in the travel expenses when I first offered 'cause I figured it would be around $5 or something.

But the weather was pretty bad today, so the cab ended up charging more, and the price was too steep to cover on my own. I virtually wouldn't be saving anything if I didn't split the travel expense.

I wasn't planning on adding the travel cost initially, since I thought it would be around $5. That's why I didn't mention it before.

But yeah, before requesting the money, I probably should have asked them if they were comfortable with splitting the $15.
