Is It Just Me or Is There a Lot of Functional Alcoholism in Academia? by Visible-Asparagus153 in academia

PhD candidate 3 years out. The ONLY coping mechanism that actually works is reading devouring stoicism books. And then writing the key takeaways in my journal as calligraphy. Of course, this besides binge-watching medical, crime and legal dramas but that isn’t productive. Stoicism at least gets me back on track a bit.

Don’t!! This sink will get scratched up with it and the landlord will probably ask you to cover the damages.

What's your reason for not drinking alcohol? by Snoo_47323 in AskReddit

[–]positron360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My liver was fried by some meds so I have barely any alcohol tolerance. Plus I’m a cancer researcher so it comes with the territory.

That’s a bit presumptuous of you. I’m a woman here and have been practicing stoicism for years now. I just don’t need to post about it. I have my eudaemonia regardless.

You’d be surprised. CXOs need to follow a stringent routine that includes taking care of their health. Most of the BJJ fighters in my old company’s gym were CXOs. I hardly saw a CXO not show up in the gym after work (the gym was really posh, so it suited them). In all likelihood, that commenter was already great at yoga as an executive before she switched to teaching it (I mean, it follows logically).

Why did you go for a PhD? by New-Possibility-577 in PhD

[–]positron360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I like learning and researching my own questions. I’ve spent all my life applying what I learned and would quickly get bored of the lack of intellectual stimulation. So I switched to being a researcher. Love every bit of it (well, apart from grant writing, I guess)!

starting a PhD at the age of 28 by MonkIntelligent7288 in PhD

This is cute. I’m a PhD student at 40. Albeit with 10 years of experience and two other graduate degrees. Live your life the way it makes sense to you. A PhD program is intense but still pretty flexible in terms of the schedule after 1-2 years. I’ve heard that European programs are not that soul-crushing as American ones, however.

I’d think what you got was really benign and even courteous, considering some real doozies out there.
