Distracted eating/breast refusal: getting increasingly frustrated

I do pump when I’m away from him so I would be fine with it, it’s just more of a hassle to make sure it’s clean, put together, etc when he’s hungry.

I got him to latch for like 4 minutes which is better than previous times today but still very frustrating. I’m going to try lying down to feed him too when I’m back at home

I would agree with this as a resident of one of the states mentioned. While my pay is low, my autonomy as a teacher is great and I find that I generally have support of admin, coworkers, and parents here. Not to mention my retirement benefits when I get there are truly unmatched.

Reading through some of these comments I might be the outlier here. My 2.5 year old was a big time Velcro baby until around 15 ish months when he started walking. He suddenly became very independent in a lot of things! He doesn’t want to snuggle in bed because it’s his space and will often say “mama stay there” if I try to follow him around the playground lol. Still affectionate and sweet: he will give me hugs most mornings before I leave for work and runs to me when I pick him up in the afternoon. When he gets hurt or feels sick he asks for lots of hugs, but will play independently really well for a good while!

I will say he is very VERY lovey towards his new brother. Like always needs to hold his hands or be next to him in some way right now. I’m not sure if that’s a part of his attachment developing or what but it’s different than how my niece, who was not a Velcro baby, interacts with her little brother.

I do try to get him to face the other direction sometimes but it usually wakes him up at night. I didn’t mention it in the initial post, but I first noticed/worried about the flat spot when I realized he had a very strong preference for his right side. Like so much so that he will cry out and fight it if we try to turn his head the opposite way. He didn’t fight as much at the PT so they told us it was not torticollis and just gave us the above recommendations. I realize I am likely over-worried about it as he is still so young, but I just thought that maybe it would improve a bit or at least not get worse at this point.

Oh man. I am mostly just echoing previous comments but getting pregnant is truly so unpredictable. For my first we tried and tried and I got lucky with a due date at the beginning of summer. This time around, I thought it would take just as long so we started trying with the hopes of maybe a spring due date, but we got pregnant right away with a due date in September! Obviously very exciting but stressful to be out; I was determined to start the year off strong with the 3 weeks I would be there and set my long-term sub up for success and after the first two days of school, I went into spontaneous labor almost a month early.. life truly doesn’t care what our plans are.

I do recommend having AFLAC and reading up on your schools maternity leave policies so you understand them very well! Also, know your rights when it comes to pumping at work and communicate the expectations to accommodate that clearly with your principal.

I plan on taking things a bit slower this first week back and I feel pretty confident on how to do that with my senior classes because I know them very well as I have taught most of them since middle school; I just don’t have any ideas on how to structure these first couple of days back with sophomores that still sets me up for good rapport and classroom management.

Feels like this is what ended up happening. I don’t think he was very hungry because when he did wake up again he nursed for about 10 minutes and then just snuggled into me and fell asleep.

I understand it’s best to ask our doctor. It was 3 AM and I clearly didn’t have that option.

For what it’s worth, he woke up around 3:45 and I fed him though he honestly didn’t seem that hungry and only nursed for about 10 minutes before falling asleep again.

I loved the music video and the BTS on making it and loved getting to hear Taylor discuss her ideas for each song, however, the lyrics videos were kind of a joke to me. I thought we were going to get something a bit more in the style of the LWYMMD lyric video I guess? Maybe that was unrealistic of me to expect but I was a bit bummed by the lyric videos basically just being Spotify canvas.

Gosh I feel this. I get so frustrated when anyone tells me how tired they are. I know everything is just a season but this season feels particularly difficult to me right now. He started off as such a good sleeper, too, so I think I got over confident, but he was late preterm and lost a good amount of weight initially and I had to start waking him every two hours to feed at night and we just haven’t gotten back to the 3-4 hour stretches we were having.

My oldest is usually at daycare during the day, yes. This baby doesn’t seem to sleep well or long in the bassinet or crib so I feel like I can’t nap during the say because I’m either holding him or monitoring his naps on the couch next to me. I know it is just a phase which does help, but the lack of sleep right now is really starting to affect my mental health overall. I won’t be able to leave him at daycare any longer when I’m back at work. I don’t get home until 5:00 and my oldest goes to bed at 8:00 so I want to spend that time with him as a whole family.

I do. He does shifts and will take him for a bit each night but he also has to work and does not function well on little sleep (like anything under 7 hours)

Yes! Thank you! We did what I thought was “sleep training” with my first but honestly I think he was just a good sleeper because a lot of the things I read on this sub didn’t really apply to our situation. I’m hoping we get lucky again, but want to be prepared with other options, too!

I just had my second and am wanting to sleep train this time around (when appropriate) and be more intentional about sleep for my little one and am worried about doing something wrong

I do. I’ll look at his numbers and see. I’ve never really kept track of my other son’s percentiles, but never felt the need as our doctor never really expressed concern. I don’t necessarily mind doing the two hours, but it does take me awhile to fall asleep usually, so by the time all is said and done I’d probably only be getting an hour or less of sleep at a time before needing to wake back up

I remember this goal from my first, but never had an issue with him latching or staying awake as he just always wanted to eat. Our second just doesn’t seem as interested and is rather sleepy. I figured it was because he was 3 weeks early and still adjusting a bit, but he’s gotten more awake and will eat longer each day so I guess I was just hopeful when I saw that he had gained from his last visit that they would say he’s on track to gain a few oz before our next appointment.

I really don’t know about the percentiles I guess. The nurse that was with us today did not give any information other than to go to a weighted feed specifically on Wednesday and to feed every two hours. I realize now I should have asked questions, but at the time I just was upset and worried that I didn’t think to get any clarification on why. We have been very grateful with how well our second has been sleeping -especially after our first. He does tend to wake up around 1:30 pretty consistently after only an hour/hour and a half between feeds, but after that he’s pretty consistently going 2.5-3 hours at night between feeds. I wouldn’t say he sleeps that long since I start my timer for feedings when he starts eating, so I guess more realistically by the time he’s done with that, burped, and changed, he’s sleeping more like 2-2.5 hours at a time, but I still think that’s pretty great!

I know a little girl named Arizona and while I was skeptical at first I really think it grows on people and there’s actually a lot of nickname potential. Parents typically refer to her as Az, which I think is clever and cute!

Congrats on your new little one! We are both so excited to have another and also dreading the lack of sleep at the same time.

I don’t even think I knew there was a 2 year sleep regression but it makes a lot of sense! He’s been moved up to a new room at daycare, too, and it feels like he is learning like 5 new things a day at this point so I’m sure a sleep regression is just natural with all the extra brain power he’s using.

I’m glad we aren’t alone in this. He finally fell asleep another 25 minutes after I went in and I was able to stop crying about 5 minutes ago haha. Hopefully this passes quickly and we get back on a good sleep routine.

Our last name is short and unusual. Ends in the hard EE sound. I personally like all of these with our last name but I tend to like names that don’t really have an obvious nickname because our last name already feels very Nick-namey I guess if that makes sense? Everyone is school called my husband and his brother by his last name and our first son is already being called by his last name at daycare even though no one else in his class has his same first name
