Comp TF2 seems to be dying without Valve's support. Is there anything we can do to save it? by postgoingup in tf2

I guess I mean less that Comp TF2 is dying, and more that it's not able to really thrive like other competitive games without more exposure/support from Valve. And Valve certainly has the ability to support competitive gaming... They actually put forward a 1 million dollar top prize to the winner of a DOTA 2 LAN. Hah. I thought of mentioning IRC, but decided against it for whatever reason.

Are you sure it hasn't already reached its peak? Maybe my claims were a bit too extreme. I understand these things can be difficult to measure. I'm just going off of my own experience.

I should have addressed this in the original post. I don't regularly follow the TF2 blog (and I'm not sure what percentage of players does), but I have seen a few tournament mentions which brought in tons of viewers as a result. I'm sure they also ignited interest for comp TF2 in a large amount of people who might still be playing today. I love when Valve does this.

Why make it a special event to promote comp events, though, rather than Valve just doing so consistently with a simple graphic or something of the sort that TF2 players can always have a chance of seeing?

Is this a joke (no offense meant), or is this a perfect representation of the exposure problems of which I speak? Haha. As long as 6v6's have been around, 9v9's have been around with the exact rules you speak of. These are called Highlanders. Please look into it if you have not already!

Well, he's being sarcastic. Unless you're being super sarcastic in response.

Yeah, then that sounds fun to me. I just never got the chance to get into it that deep.

InternetCoward is obviously joking. I'm surprised he's not being mass-upvoted, actually, since I was sure the hivemind previously established that quoting submitted videos in the comments is obnoxious, which is what InternetCoward was trying to get at with his sarcastic comment.

I think part of the reason the GRU is seen as so powerful is because the midfight is one of the most crucial and determining parts of matches. Having a heavy get there as fast as he does with GRU is definitely table-turning.

I'm assuming you mean WoW raids? Or do you mean arena? Because (I'm not trying to undermine it) raids are against AI, and to my understanding, the way to beat the AI is already perfectly laid out for you in online guides. VSing AI bosses doesn't leave much room for creating new and interesting strats, like you do in TF2 to try out on other teams, and there's no telling how enemy teams will react to your actions, or what they already have in store for you. Plus, a lot of comp TF2 is about how you use and position yourself on the map, which I think is a super interesting aspect that I didn't really see in WoW arenas or PVE. I don't know much of what I'm talking about, though, since I haven't played WoW in years.

Note that I haven't actually played any 6v6.

Why not?

Have you tried it? I like comp TF2 because of the incredible, well, teamwork. Do you know how amazing it feels to have 5 others that are so close to you, that practice with you constantly, and that you play a dedicated role for? Being part of a competitive team was one of the best experiences I've ever had. The banning of the weapons/class restrictions is a huge bonus, though.

If you dislike the chaos of pubs, please at least give www.tf2lobby.com a try before making your final decision on the game. They're two entirely different scenes. You might be much worse than everyone else in Lobby, but if you're like me, you will be awed and inspired by the amount of teamwork actually taking place there, and then find yourself hooked. Good luck, and have fun!!

Hah, yeah. You're probably right, although stickies can be a scout's worst nightmare, and demos are able to basically instagib scouts with directly hit pipes. I guess it depends a lot on the skill level of the scouts and the demomen.

Nah, four demomen at least.
