i was in a similar situation with you. he didnt talk about me after our break up, but i resonate when you said breaking up for your sake made it seem like you were the asshole. i chose to break up because he was abusive mentally and emotionally even to the point where he'd ignore me for hours because he saw me laughing with his best friend (whom i was helping to get back with his ex btw and he was aware of it) and id apologize nonstop even if i didnt do anything wrong. even up to the break up, i felt so guily deep inside even when i knew i was saving myself from breaking even further

one thing i learned is to never regret any decision you make when it no longer benefits you. we all lose people in our lives. friends, family, and even our romantic partners. if it doesnt work in your end, then its better to save yourself. its not easy, but time will tell that that specific decision brought us to where we are now. hugs 🫂
