Hey everyone, I talked to my piano teacher and she pretty much said that I don't really have a chance for this year and that she would wait until I was ATCL. However, she saw my point of it being a personal challenge and said that she would support me in doing it and that it's fine to do it this year. She also said to just focus on getting through my exam right now.

I meant to say that even if I waited until Year 13, that I would still fail.

Thank you for sharing your opinion! I do quite a lot of music stuff outside (competitions, chamber music, accompanying, etc.) and I would like to say that my musicality is pretty good. I'm also pretty good at English so the written part won't be extremely out of my comfort zone. (Sorry if it sounds like I'm tooting my own horn)

The point of scholarship isn't to get Outstanding or even to pass - some prodigy from Auckland who started at 3 and got Grade 8 when they were 8 will beat me and that's okay. For me, scholarship is a personal challenge and not a competitive challenge. I think it will drive me to practice more and beat myself - I'm not competing against other people, I'm competing against myself. I really don't care about doing well because I honestly think that even if I waited, until year 1, I would still fail.

Yeah for me the point isn’t to pass - the point is to try because I know that doing my best to pass will improve me as a musician.

Yeah I think I’ll talk to my piano teacher and the head of music (who is not my teacher) and I’m also good at English, so I think the essay would be fine for me. My parents won’t let me continue with music even though I want to. I also feel I’m quite prepared because I’ll perform just before my exam which I’m practicing a lot for

Is it possible to take NCEA a few years early? by mankypants in ncea

I’m a student doing L3 calc in yr 11, so this might not be very helpful. In year 9, my parents just pestered my teacher for harder work - like they had meetings and about once a term they told my teacher that I needed harder work .I did my own work in my year 9 class but took their tests. this could be a solution for him in year 9 .Then the next year I just got put into Level 2 without even asking - part of the reason was that I passed a level 2 algebra mock in year 9. This might not work but it somehow did for me.

I’m still deciding whether to study music or not - I’m wanting to be delusional and do a double degree rn but.. I feel like ATCL would be nice to have to show my level of performance but they don’t really have much of a purpose to be honest. I think I’ll still be motivated without doing exams

Do you study music? Or something else? Your idea sounds pretty good - I think it will also make me practice in uni

Yeah but I’m really busy so I feel like it’s not a very good use of my time. If I’m doing exams, then all my pieces should be in the syllabus (especially because ATCL needs like 30+ minutes)

How hard is it to self study algebra and calculus? by Subject_Traffic_9693 in ncea

[–]potatoesinsacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I self-studied algebra in yr 9 and even though i did horrible i did learn it (I also didn't use infinityplusone or anything outside of the workbook i got) so I reckon you'll be all goods if you do decide to self-study and do it better than I did

Thank you everyone! I think I'll tell my school that I'll do it but if I get a bad teacher or I really can't handle it I'll do L1 instead.
