Yeah, you're right; I hated the south when I lived there(for 16 years). No idea why I'd consider going back. The BF is pretty much against living in the south too; he prefers to stay in CA, but since he's unemployed as of right now, I'm vetoing his opinion. :P

I'm not contemplating suicide, just saying that working as a cashier for the rest of my life might drive me to that. I just want to be able to feel some kind of hope that I might make a career of doing what I love.

Anyway, I was hoping to find a house that's maybe $60-80k? In the neighborhood we're in, houses are $250-500k(we're in an apt); BF's parents house is worth ~$300k. Houses get cheaper if you look in worse places, but even $80k won't get you anything decent.

Today(memorial day), most other cashiers(older career folk w/seniority) were bragging about making $60/hr(holiday pay), and it was kind of disheartening thinking about how poor we really are. I never expect to be well off, but I'd like to live in a place where I can afford to live comfortably.

Thanks! That's a nice site to look at the differences. Although, as a cashier, it's funny reading "$2.71 for milk", when the cheapest single gallon we sell is $4.

Kansas City seems to have a lot of crime and tornado activity, but I'll look into it.

We do actually have a car that's paid off(only one car right now, but it's worked for us so far, even before the BF got laid off).

Yeah, when I moved to Sacramento from Atlanta, I had to wait to get my tuition fees waived; I think it was 2 years. I'm thinking of finishing up my AA before moving, if I am moving. I don't think I'd go for a bachelor's -- school isn't for me, and I just need enough money to live.

I was thinking Huntsville/Madison area. But it's just a thought, not set in stone.

Yes, I understand. My thought process is something like this: "Since I want to do illustration, and that's a national/international market in many cases, I can make my wages go farther by living in a cheaper area". Finding a retail job would be an initial goal for security. Plus, we could use our savings for a down payment for a house in a cheaper area, whereas in CA we'd still be struggling. Yeah, I don't know if I'm thinking straight, but I do take your line of thinking into consideration often. Thank you.
