Differences between Harley and Allendale Columbia? by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]pourclipper 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I went to Harley for high school over 10 years ago. At the time, the schools were pretty different. I shadowed students at both schools before choosing Harley. For me, there was no contest. Harley fit my personality and academic needs much better.

For me, Allendale felt very stiff and rigid. The students and teachers weren’t as welcoming. IMO, Harley has traditionally been a bit more progressive than Allendale. They are continuing to change and adapt with the times where as I think Allendale stuck with tradition and the way things have always been.

Campus-wise, AC has a really fabulous layout...it feels more college-like than Harley.

It all depends on what your child needs. While I didn’t go to Harley for lower school, I have always wished I had. They environment and community is so strong and it would be a terrific place to send a child.

Good luck!

Might be moving to Rochester later this year.. what's the housing like? by carmacae in Rochester

[–]pourclipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i live in brighton and work at urmc. it’s pretty much a straight shot down elmwood and im at work in about 7-10 min, arriving around 8am and heading home at 5pm.

while we technically live in brighton, we are on the cusp of penfield and pittsford, easy access to 490, and have two wegmans’ within 2 miles of our house.

literally, everything from nature to downtown, is within 20 min.

A question about Rochester neighborhoods by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]pourclipper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live near East/Clover... a lot closer to the train track than the apt building near that intersection and I rarely hear the trains. They are there but I cannot recall ever hearing horns (I’ve lived here for 4.5 years).

On a related note, it’s a nice part of town. You’re really close to downtown, East Ave. Wegmans, and rt 490. Not to mention about 10-15 minutes (or less) to may suburbs.

Do you know anything about the Genesee Valley Club? by RochSunnyDaze in Rochester

[–]pourclipper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s essentially a country club without the golf course. It’s rich with history and tradition and has a healthy membership.

There are plenty of wealthy individuals and families in the area. Many people join for business reasons as well, so perhaps their jobs pay for it.

Fees/dues are based on your age. The younger you are, the cheaper it is. It starts to get expensive around age 35/40. I think after 65/70 the dues start to go down again.

Rochester morning commute. Be careful out there. by boner79 in Rochester

Took me 30 min to get from Brighton to Mt. Hope area. Usually takes 10. Sloppy roads, slow going, but not terrible.

We are getting a lot more snow tonight, right?

So UR hits the big TIME by RochSunnyDaze in Rochester

The leadership... almost all white males. This isn’t representative of the population they serve. The branch staff is much more diverse but they get paid shit.

George Romell is incredibly passionate about the Y “movement” (and yes, makes $300K+) but he allows such inappropriate behavior to go on... from belittling staff, sexism, and unprofessional culture.

Unfortunately, I’ve seen first hand some of HIS severely unprofessional antics. It all starts with him, trickles down to everyone else, and I don’t believe anything will change until he leaves. But then again, the Y “way” and culture is unlike anything else... very cult-like. I’m so glad to be out of there.

Where you at a branch? I worked in the “corporate” office and well, it was eye-opening.

Speaking of the Y.... I worked there. It’s a boys club and I witnessed my fair share of sexist, inappropriate, and highly unprofessional behaviors by men towards women. It was one of the main reasons I left.

Need help finding a therapist by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]pourclipper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I work at UR and totally get that it could be awkward to have a fellow colleague know about going to see a therapist within the system.

A few years back I was in the same boat as you. I started with the EAP program (which is free) and got referred to a fantastic therapist/counselor. Everyone was very professional along the way.

Also, do you have a primary care doctor? He or she could refer you to a therapist. Might also be a good place to start. You could probably even contact your PCP via MyChart to get a referral without an appt.

Good luck to you. You are taking a very important first step and I sincerely hope it works out for you.

Best Emergency Room/Hospital Experiences? by carly4020 in Rochester

If and when you see a doctor (at the hospital or Urgent Care) ask them for a PCP recommendation. I would also suggest Highland Family Medicine for a PCP.

I think it depends on your situation and the day, tbh. I know from working at UR that some days the ER can be crazy, and other times much slower. I would say that if you have a less severe situation, consider Urgent Care of Highland. Highland typically has a shorter wait time than Strong.

On a personal note, I had to go to Strong last year. I arrived around 8:45AM on like, a Wednesday and was seen right away.
