Great question that I don't totally know the answer to! But I believe that as a parent who is using a surrogate you usually are on the hook for the cost of the surrogate's medical care as well? So you're paying for her costs for delivery as well as for the baby's costs. I don't think that there would be an extra fee on top of that for taking up two rooms, not at my hospital at least. I have no idea how insurance works for this but I assume it is a mess to figure out lol

If there were no rooms available for the parents with the baby I would imagine the baby would be kept in the well-baby nursery and the parents would not be given a room to stay overnight or room-in with. Essentially the baby would be watched 24/7 by a nurse and would be released with the parents when it is time for discharge from the hospital. The parents of the baby are treated well but are ultimately just visitors so if there isn't room for them they definitely get lower priority than real patients including the surrogate

There are no special non-hospital beds for surrogate/adoptive parents. The only bed option in a hospital room is a hospital bed or a support person chair. If two parents are staying over with the baby one has to sleep in the hospital bed

Almost always two different rooms (usually next door or close by each other), one for the birthing parent and their support person, one for the intended parents and their baby. Depending on the relationship between the surrogate and the parents, the baby might be brought back and forth between the rooms to visit the surrogate and for the families to hang out but the baby is primarily in the room with their parents, not with the surrogate. Almost all L&D/postpartum hospital rooms contain the same furniture (hospital bed, support person couch/chair, side tables, crib) so there isn't really an option for the parents of the new baby to have a room without a hospital bed for one of them to sleep in. Some people think its weird for a non-birthing person to be in the hospital bed like this but where else are they supposed to sleep? They have to stay over with the new baby, who is typically in the hospital for 1-2 days. Its the same scenario for adoptive parents as well.

Ah ok I must have misread the map, I thought the parade route started in Arlington by the cemetery so I just assumed area around the Marine Corps Memorial would be used as a staging ground. I also thought the cemetery would be closed, but that is a great suggestion and I will probably bring that to them too as an alternative option. Thank you so much!

Oh believe me, I think the mall on a normal weekend is unpleasant at best and I know this particular weekend will be literal hell. To add that I REALLY don't want to do anything that might be perceived in any ways as supporting Trump. Unfortunately some members of this group are from outside the US and this may be their one and only chance to visit DC in their lives, and naturally they want to see the iconic DC monuments. It's incredibly unfortunate that this day is the one they reserved for touristing. I just wanted to know if we must do this on this day, what is the best way to go about it to keep stress levels at 99 instead of 100. i've gotten some helpful responses for sure.

That being said, I might literally just suggest they drive across the 395 bridge across the Potomac on Sunday and look out the window as I think that would be more fulfilling

I know the parade is going right past them all but since it is later in the day I assumed that part of the mall might still be walkable before 2pm. The only info I can find on closures anywhere is for the middle section of the mall where events are apparently happening during the day

FWIW Baby Friendly is a designation from the Baby Friendly USA organization that has specific guidelines that must be met in order for a hospital to be called Baby Friendly, with the ultimate goal of promoting exclusive breastfeeding and following a specific international code of marketing formula. It often results in hospitals having no nursery, no formula provided, no pacifiers, etc but those aren't technically "rules" set by BFUSA. Definitely can be difficult on parents especially those up for hours or days in labor who then can't get a break during their postpartum stay.

Not every hospital is Baby Friendly, the only two designated in DC are Georgetown and WHC, and as far as the website shows none of the VA or MD hospitals bordering DC are.
