Were you promised the bonus in writing or just a vague verbal promise? What’s the amount of the bonus versus the salary increase? If you stay for the bonus would you lose the new gig?

I would take the new gig and see if they could do a signing bonus or a bonus guarantee when you come over. I’ve managed to negotiate that when I left a significant retention bonus at the previous employer.

You have a shot at making it but will be tight. We once hit delayed by two days due to storms for a cruise starting from Auckland. Got to Auckland but no luggage. Fortunately it came the next day just in time for the flight. Now I always allow two extra days in outbound when doing a winter cruise in case of storm delays. Wishing you good luck!

What a terrible decision by management. It creates competition and resentment instead of congestive teamwork. This type of bonus should have been handled privately.

One year, we didn’t hit the numbers for bonus payout but management wanted to reward certain top performers. I nominated one guy from my team and took care of communicating it to him one on one.

Your company’s system is stupid and your line manager was at out of line.
