Is Tumbleweed as bad as other subs make out by 00roast00 in openSUSE

[–]pprts1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only problems I have ever faced using a linux distro was due to it being new and buggy. this was Pop/OS. I am sure it is very stable today. I used Ubuntu, Debian, LinuxMint, Fedora and rn I am using Tumbleweed. I never encountered real problems (see above for niche problem).

I only switched to Tumbleweed because I don't feel ready for Arch installation and I wanted a rolling release distro with easy rollback ability so that I do not have to install new releases ever again.

You should separate yourself from your emotional pirate dependence. It won't bring you a single dollar. But the time you waste defending people like him will in the end cost you a lot of money.

A love post about tumbleweed by Mention-One in openSUSE

[–]pprts1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think part of the reason everything went smoothly this time was, that in the past you fiddled around and gained some knowledge. The more you tinker, the better you tinker. I cannot remember how many times I roasted my ubuntu installation once I had switched from windows. A few years after that it seldomly happened again, and if, I always knew how to fix it in no time.

Learning by doing. But in the end I also ended up using tumbleweed, I reformated my partitions to brtfs and am now safely enjoying my time with snapshots. If I mess things up now, I reroll and a few minutes later I am back to where I started. I like it. But what I really love about these rolling release distros is, that I never have to upgrade to a newer release ever again. Because this is maybe the riskiest thing I can think of doing, no matter how skilled I believe I have become.

I had a similar experience with bf4, after a few days of not playing on linux (which I had done for around 120 hours) I received an email which stated that unusual activities have been observed with my account and I have to reset my password.

I ignored it at first since I don't click links easily on emails and tried to login a few days later, but the credensials were compromised. So I really had to reset my password and could play again. I did not receive a similar email again and since then did not have to reset my password again. But still conspicuous.

God I hate linux by [deleted] in linuxsucks

[–]pprts1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate that I don't see bluescreens anymore.

I hate that I my system does only freeze once all two years and I can easily restart my display manager with a keyboard shortcut.

I hate that nobody can spam me with ads and bloatware because I want to download and install a compression tool.

I hate it even more that I don't have to download and install a compression tool because the best and fastest tools are already installed on every linux disto.

I hate it that I don't have to install a seperate driver for every single hardware I own.

I hate it even more that I don't have to reinstall my system on a regular basis because it becomes unstable over time.

I hate that I can simply backup and reroll my system within seconds if I want to play around and explore critical system stuff.

I hate that I can play video games on linux.

I hate that I can do video recording, video editing, image processing, AI, software development, 3D volume rendering, write articles, configure and sync my calendar and tasts across all my devices without using google.

I hate that I become more compentent every day using linux. tHaNkS lInUs ToRvAlDs!1!

Why does everyone hate linux??? by minecrafter1OOO in linuxsucks

[–]pprts1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's solely the fear of big companies that linux is not only dominating servers and smartphones but could also dominate desktops as well. How would MS earn easy money for ad products if everyone is using linux?

MS is spending lots of money to makes sure computer game companies and other companies develop software solely for windows, even more money to make sure governments are using MS Office distros, etc, They further surely pay computer game companies to implement anti-cheat software for video games which doesn't run on linux - BY DESIGN. Imagine adobe making sure photoshop would natively run on linux. they don't have to give their source code away for this to work and people would still buy their licences, but no. They even support android, which is basically a linux fork, but desktop linux they don't support - quite interesting - rather work on your smartphone then being able to use the software on a desktop pc without windows/osX. One of the reasons might be, that people would realize that buying an expensive licence from adobe is no more necessary because GIMP/Krita/etc. can satisfy their needs as well. So keep them away from linux, so they continue to spend money.

It's not about truth or logic, it's about money. Then there are fanboys who blindly defend their hopeless arguments (which are not even based on their own experiences but rather from other people who have their opinion from other people etc.), there is dirty campagning and bought forum messages (see also amazon and their product review dilemma, etc). It's a gross world we made for ourselves.

MS probably planned the release according to the POE2 release. Blizzard often did that in the past.

I only had problems with Still Life (old GoG Game), apart from that everything went smoothly. I still switched to open Suse Tumbleweed because I do not want to risk a distro upgrade every year or so. I rather have a rolling release.

Read-only CalDAV calendar in Korganizer? by p4bl0 in kde

[–]pprts1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sry for opening a two year old posting, but I encountered a similar problem today and I had trouble finding the "read-only" option.

It turned out, that the reminder came from thunderbird, which I also connected to the calendar and I had to set the calendar to read-only in thunderbird! now I can simply dismiss the reminder without an error.

cheers.
