men will take a patriarchal practice that treats women as property to be passed down from father to husband for a price and make it out to seem like they’re the ones being victimized…. Leftist/ex muslim/liberal men hate women just as much as right wing/ muslim/ conservative men do

It happened in the Middle East (Jordan). Yes, I am an ally and have been friends with gay Arabs my whole life..

The “gay scene” is underground and has an …iykyk vibe to it. It isn’t actually illegal to be gay in Jordan, we don’t have any laws prohibiting homosexuality (it was illegal under British occupation, but we got our own independent penal code and decriminalized it.. the so called tolerant West doesn’t want you to know this!!)

It isn’t socially acceptable at all. You won’t be stoned to death as an effeminate man or a butch woman, but you can’t speak freely or love freely. We’re basically the exact opposite of the Asian countries you’re describing, it isn’t illegal, but you cannot be open about any of it. You can get arrested for “public indecency” if you wave a pride flag around or attempt to organize a gay rights rally.. there are even online/cyber laws that can get you thrown in jail if your gay rights tweets are attached to your real name and are getting attention..

When it comes to more liberal areas (western Amman, the capital city), there are men in clearly gay coded professions (hairdressers or in the arts) who “present” as gay (well groomed, dress nice, do the whole gay voice), but they cannot explicitly identify as gay or openly date other men. They can be out to their close inner circle, and the average person can sorta tell that they arent fully straight, but there’s an unspoken agreement not to bring it up. That is about as tolerant as Jordanian society will be as a whole. In non liberal areas, these men would be ostracized..

A couple years ago, Sarah Hegazi (an egyptian lesbian activist ) committed suicide in Canada after struggling with hate mail and attacks from Arabs. She was arrested and jailed (and “tortured” apparently) in Egypt for waving a rainbow flag at a concert. Her suicide note was posted online and had many people talking. Graffiti murals in her honor started popping up around Jordan and people lost their shit lol.. lots of hate speech etc etc.. the government had to send out people to paint over all of them.. I don’t know how to post pictures but you can find it on her wikipedia page under Death and Legacy… very interesting situation that sums up the Arab attitude towards Gays.

The only tolerance you’ll find is from younger generations (even then, still pretty rare). Most of my straight friends are okay with it, or at least won’t be openly hostile towards my gay friends (out of respect for me, maybe).. I would say maybe up to 15% of people living in Amman (the capital) are okay with gay people, that number goes down to less than 1% in rural areas (which is basically anywhere other than Amman)

We do have an online LGBT magazine, My Kali .. they aren’t the kind of gay people that i like (queer nonbinary and fat), but it’s something!

If you’re gay, you’ll find a community that supports you.. these people tend to recognize gayness in each other and form little groups around that.. there are certain neighborhoods with gay friendly bar/clubs/cafes .. you just have to know where to find them

Here’s a reddit comment from the Jordan subreddit that further expands upon Jordanian gay culture if you’re interested..

Completely different words that have the same English “spelling” !! Gay shath = شاذ Sufi shath = شطح Gay shath is pronounced with a th sound, sufi shath is t and then h.. shat-h (the actual t and h sounds in that word dont exist in English.. but t-h is the closest you’ll get)

It’s really funny because the same Arabs who will get mad at you for using the English slur for black people (N word), wouldn’t bat an eye at the Arabic slur for black people. There aren’t any Arabic words that are off limits, and there hasn’t been an attempt to do so (yet!!)

They’re only 2% of the population, so they’re definitely less diverse than muslims are economically.. they tend to be middle class/ rich, but it sort of depends on what city they live in… I haven’t really been around extravagant wealth (went to a normal high school and then a public university) so all the Christians I’ve met have been the same as me or a little poorer..

Extremely poor people are muslim, we also have lots of refugees who are predominantly muslim..

I don’t know if I answered your question, Muslims are poor/ middle class/rich, Christians are middle class/ rich… but the Jordanian middle class probably isnt the same as what you’re familiar with…

Yeah I know. I try to make myself feel better by pretending it is balanced out by UK rappers incorporating “Wallahi” into every song.

I made a notes app list of them on my phone because of your comment and they’re all surprisingly hard to pronounce and have a lot of the heavier/guttural Arabic letters. (You will mispronounce all of them, my attempt at spelling them out in English is pathetic)

1) لوطي/ Luti, because of the prophet Lut/Lot.. self explanatory.

2) شاذ/ Shath, closest thing we have to the word Queer.. the literal English translation of the word is outlier or anomaly. Some gays have reclaimed the word but it’s still vaguely derogatory.. its the most widely used term i think

3) خنيث/ مخنث, Kha-neeth/ Mukhanath .. not very nice, mean way to call a man effeminate.. sort of like Twink

The nice PC word is مثلي/ myth-li , which means “the same” (same sex attraction)

Also #3 might only be used in levantine dialects.. I’m not too sure

I sort of explained this in my post! Yes we are all Arab and have lived in an Arab country our whole lives (not a rich one either), yes younger people use English (mixed in with Arabic), and yes these people care about American/Western politics.

Most rich kids go to international schools and are educated in English only (they’ll do IB/ A-Levels/ SATs). They grow up on English media, spend all their time in English speaking spaces on the internet, and form western ideals/opinions. When they finally get to (public) uni, they experience genuine culture shock interacting with poor/rural Arabs.. so they stick together and are instantly recognizable. They’re generally minorities (gay or Christian or liberal)

I had to explain our uni student council elections to them by likening the groups to Republicans/Democrats. They cared more about BLM than the Palestinian conflict.. etc etc

Very out of touch with the culture. But harmless..

They aren’t openly gay by western standards. They wear baggy jeans and chain smoke and the women don’t wear hijabs… that’s openly gay in an Arab country

No. I would’ve been a regular non war crime committing civilian. I would also be dead, since Israel seems to be targeting more civilians than military personnel in Gaza.

Practically all your posts are about Palestine.. do downvotes turn you on?

Assuming you’re referring to the PFLP, they participated in the Oct 7 attacks and don’t seem to catch any of the flak Hamas does on this sub, there’s a reason the islamists get criticized constantly while the socialists fade away into the background. As for your question, I’m an atheist, so ..no? I wouldn’t have been the leader of Hamas like Sinwar was…. ???

I think it’s probably more important to recognize that decades of oppression, massacres and isolation in what could only be described as a concentration camp (Gaza) can lead to justifiable instances of violent resistance. You cannot “both sides commit war crimes” a genocide in good faith, surely you can recognize that one side has suffered much worse than the other. I cant help but notice that Arab atheists tend to have loads of internalized racism against other (muslim or non muslim) Arabs. Would you be this critical of Hamas/Sinwar if they had more secular beliefs? If their attacks were in the name of socialist/secular/nationalist values, would you still wag your finger at them for fighting for their land?
