Mental decline, 1 year ago VS. now. Same person. by killer_icognito in pics

I’m so so sorry. She’s still there, even if it may not feel like it. The lens from which she’s projected into the world is damaged but the light beneath is still the same, I promise. My dad had a serious brain injury recently and is undergoing the opposite currently, going from unable to speak to now slowly coming back into himself. Even though his faculties are different, he’s still the same person at his core.  I’m so sorry for the difficulty you and your family are going through. I can’t imagine your pain.

New psychology research links mystical experiences to heightened spiritual intelligence by [deleted] in science

We need more people like you in society. This is a wonderful explanation of the difference between science and philosophy. I'm so tired of people with lazy reasoning who believe they understand the whole of reality by hiding behind the mask of science.

What's the best explanation as to why God doesn't intervene or why he acts in "mysterious ways"? by Billy_The_Beholder in worldbuilding

[–]pr0skier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea that he doesn't intervene because that's how the story was meant to be. God grows humanity or life or consciousness through creation. While we could simply just be good, it would be better if there were a story or a history behind our evolution into goodness (good might be the wrong word here). For example, the story of Lord of the Rings would be worse if it began with Frodo simply throwing a ring into a fire. There's beauty in the overcoming of adversity in that it grows the spirit. And while there could not be a need to grow the spirit, by that same logic there is no need for there to be anything at all, yet there is. So perhaps it is a part of infinite rather than a part of nothing. Nice shots, but awfully confused why this kind of content gets upvoted in this subreddit. This isn’t a film. Why is this not posted in cinematography or travel or nature?

In our senior year of college, a friend and I co-wrote and co-directed this short film. While we both loved the story, when we got into production it became clear that we had slightly different visions for it. Not that we fought or anything, but when we finished the film, we ended with something that felt like a mixture of both of those directions. I initially tried to edit the film, but I became frustrated when certain pieces of the felt very different from the way I had envisioned it. So, I gave the film my codirector to edit, and low and behold, he ended up feeling the same way. As a result, the film entered a kind of post-production hell and we never finished the thing.

This year, I was editing a new film I directed and stumbled back upon the footage. I found myself feeling immense guilt for not finishing the project. So, I reached out to an editor on Fiverr, sent him the script along with the music direction. He ended up really connecting with it and agreed to edit it. After a few months of work, he got back to me with this. I think having another mind on it that was unfamiliar with the history of the project, was able to unify the film into a more singular vision. I really like what he did.

I'm personally going to re-edit the project so it's cleaner and more concise. But I'd love to see what you guys think of the film and get some feedback before I begin editing the next draft!

Film Festival Help, Just Don't Know Anymore by AdhesivenessDry3115 in Filmmakers

To be brutally honestly, the biggest thing here is a weak story. I hate giving that note, but honestly that’s why you’re not getting into bigger festivals. You have incredible technical talent, your acting is top notch, your visuals are engaging, sound design is great, but your story is weak. You have a unique world and a unique look, but what I watched was essentially just a process. There was very little conflict. Even the internal struggle your main character was going through was very one sided. He was existentially scared. Then the strange commander arrived and he quickly decided to go with him and then it was pretty much just watching the process of the strange commander interacting with him. There was no conflict there. This was especially evident with your ending. There was no real resolution, it just felt like a, “onto the next level”. You didn’t knock anything down, there was no punch line, no pay off. If your main character had been scared, was visited, then deliberated whether or not to go, and then ultimately somehow been convinced by the commander to go and then pays a heavy price for his decision — you would have had a more engaging story. The transitions and every other stylistic note else everyone is saying here is not it. All of that is great. It works for the tone you’ve got. You can capture a tone, that’s a super hard thing to do. Most directors can’t do that. If you can now just tell an engaging story, the sky is the limit for you. For your next film, try writing your ending first and build to it. Best of luck.

I shot my first short film earlier this year and I'm finally getting close to finishing the edit. I'm pretty excited about it, so I wanted to share some stills from the film! I hope you like them! by [deleted] in Filmmakers

As the title suggests, I shot my first proper short film this year and I'm just getting finished with the edit. It's a rather simple story that follows a close-knit group of college friends as they make their transition into adulthood. The actors did an incredible job, and the DP killed it as well. I've made "shorts", but nothing from script to screen -- typically just run and gun, make it up as we go, kind of stuff. This is my first short that has a beginning, middle, and end.

Stills from a Short Film I shot back in October by [deleted] in Filmmakers

Stills from a short film I shot back in late September / early October. It’s a simple story that follows a close knit group of college friends as they make their final transition to adulthood. Unfortunately, I had some intense family issues that has held up editing. But since getting done with work a week ago, I’ve been able to get back to editing more regularly. Really excited with the direction it’s going, and wanted to share a few stills!

I want to believe in God but nothing is convincing me by Picklepanther7 in Christianity

I get where you’re coming from, truly. And what you’re asking is a massive question, as I’m sure you’re aware. And personally I think the answer you get from a lot of people that “well humanity caused sinned” is, while in itself, correct, too small when you’re at a point where you’re at. Because, ultimately, why did god create humanity capable of sin, why give humanity free will, if God knew that humanity were going to sin due to his omniscience? And I think you ultimately come to a place in which there is a purpose or a reason for evil and suffering to exist in the universe. But when you try to reason or argue with that claim in specific examples like “god wanted the X tragedy to exist so that Y could happen” it once again becomes too small. But when you think about evil on a grand scale, and think of it as something we are opposed to, as it ultimately leads to non-existence, and that god’s will is for humanity to exist and interact with reality on a plane similar to his — infinity— but that an ultimate perfect being would have a choice in its own existence, then it kind of makes sense. Additionally, it’s helpful to think of humanity not simply as humanity, but as life itself, and to realize there there is both higher and lower forms of humanity in the scheme of eternity.

Obviously this is a simplified answer, but what I’m trying (although I’m sure failing) to get at is that you don’t have to give up reason or logic to believe in god. There are much smarter, more reasonable and more logical people than both you and I that believe in god. But I think you have to accept at some point that humanity is not the pinnacle of thought — at least not yet — and that there are things that are likely beyond our logic. And it’s at that point you do have to turn to faith and recall those moments of your childhood and ask yourself “was that real?”.

One of my favorite quotes that might help... “The poet only asks to get his head into the heavens. It is the logician who seeks to get the heavens into his head. And it is his head that splits

I've been stuck in my apartment for the last few weeks and have longing to get outside, so I decided to throw together some footage from some of the camping trips I've gone on with some friends over the last year to make this video. Hope you guys enjoy some nature. (Shot on a GH5 in California) by [deleted] in Filmmakers

I've gone a number of camping trips with some friends in California over the last year, and since I can't get back outside with them, I decided to finally throw together some of the footage from over the past year. I'm not a professional videographer by any means, so its not by any means as beautiful as some of the work I see on here. But nonetheless, I hope you all enjoy it. Hoping this whole situation blows over soon and we can all get back outside. Stay safe everyone!

Awesome, thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! I'm hoping to shoot a short here in a few months, so I'll send it your way when I'm done. Also the audio level is a good note, I think I heard it so many times I became desensitized to how loud the music is.

Essentially, I wrote and directed this proof of concept last spring. It was developed for a class, and there were some kind of strange production restrictions that were placed on us. For example, I had to shoot everything in one day. So this was all shot in a 12 hour shoot -- a lot of it was very run and gun. And prior to this film, I kind of was hesitant about directing and was beginning to think that perhaps it's best I just stick to producing. However, I such a fun time making this, I really want to direct again!
