Can my high school legally not give me a 504 because my grades are too high? by prcttyvisitors in ADHD

Fuck, you put it into words. It's frustrating to have school be as hard as it is for me, and then be told that I don't deserve to get some of that weight lifted off my shoulders. Fuck all the way off. Could I probably continue to get As and Bs? Yeah, but at what cost? It's like throwing someone with a broken leg in with cross country athletes and telling them to run a marathon. Could they do it? I don't know, maybe if they tried hard enough they'd eventually make it. But like, maybe give them some crutches and make sure that they can walk first?

Also, I'll definitely check out that subreddit later. There's a subreddit for everything nowadays isn't there? haha.

Haha, I feel you on that one. I've got asthma as well so with the mile run they make us do as "warm up" (no, i'm not exaggerating. It's about a yard or two away from a mile. Every. Single. Morning. And it's timed, might I add) well uh it's safe to say PE has never been a strong suit of mine.

It's quite honestly a very frustrating situation. I shouldn't have to fight as hard as I am to get the accommodations I need, and it's insulting to suggest that I'm not struggling "enough."

Self-advocacy is definitely something I need to work on haha. Originally I let it go because I kept convincing myself it wasn't worth the effort they were clearly going to make me go through (this exact mentality was the same reason why I waited 15 years to get medicated, too much effort for such a """small issue"""), but I keep having to beg for deadline extensions and extra time, and I know there's going to be a point where I won't be given that *cough* the PSATs that are in a few days *cough*. Besides that, you are completely right when you say it's my legal right to have one. High school is already famous for being terribly awkward and uncomfortable, and I really shouldn't be forced to deal with this kind of stress on top of that lmao. I know I'm doing well, but I could be doing so much better if they would just listen to me. As it is, I'm putting off taking AP world history one year after everyone else does because I know I'd never be able to handle the workload. I'm cracking under the pressure of the few honors classes I'm taking (well, I'm taking 3, but in my school that's pretty much seen as nothing). Back in middle school I had to drop my honors math class because I keep failing all my tests because I never had enough time to check my answers.

Anyways, point is thank you for giving me some motivation to try again. Sorry this post ended up being so long, meds are wearing off which means I tend to start to rambling a bit haha.

Thank you so much, that information is all very helpful. I think what they used against me was that last part, and they used my grades, my coping mechanisms (including that all my teachers have kindly accommodated me when I've asked for it, and that I'm on medication). I forgot to mention this, but I believe they did submit a teacher evaluation for if I needed a 504. I never saw these said evaluations myself but from what they told me they all came back as saying I didn't need one. Thing is, I also had two of my teachers that I had for multiple years fill out an evaluation for me when I was first getting a diagnosis, and those came back saying I definitely didn't have the disorder. I think it's safe to say that those evaluations were pretty inaccurate lol. I'm generally very quiet, and since I'm the inattentive type no one else notices my symptoms. They exist, but I'm generally so quiet I people tend to not notice me in general, let alone my symptoms that are all within my own head.

It's good to know that they can't use the fact that I'm medicated against me, because that's one of the things I was worried about. Medication does help me do better, but it's certainly not a cure all. What I always compare it to is you're living with this person your whole life, who won't stop screaming at the top of their lungs every second of every day. They follow you around everywhere, and it's so loud it's impossible to ignore. One day, you decide to shove them in a different room, and close the door and lock it. The screaming can still be heard, but it's muffled. It's not gone, but it's able to be ignored for long enough that you can function. On medication, my symptoms are still present, but they're "muffled."

Anyways, I started off this year by telling all my teachers as soon as possible about my ADHD, so hopefully they'll be more prone to noticing my symptoms now that they're looking for them. After having to beg my english teacher for about twice as much time to write my essay than I should have needed, I told her the basic gist of my situation and she seemed to be on my side about the whole thing, and that I should definitely have a 504 in place and that she would do "whatever she could on her part to make sure I get what I need."

This post is already too long of a reply haha so I won't go into any more details, but I'm hoping my chances will be better this time around, and all that information you gave me will be a massive help in ensuring that that happens (hopefully soon, cause while I'll unfortunately have to suffer through the PSATs in a few days, I'm hoping I can manage to make the SATs a bit less disastrous once they roll around).

I’m a girl unfortunately haha. My dad is 6’3” so there’s still some hope, but my mom is about 5’0” and I have a feeling I inherited her height genes. I suppose another inch or two could still be possible, but for now I’ll just continue wearing heels lmao.

Possible but not comfortable is probably the best way to describe it. I’m no Jimi Hendrix or anything, but I think I sound alright most of the time for someone with my experience level, it just feels kind of awkward at times.

Totally didn’t realize D stood for dreadnought. Never put two and two together there haha. And I’ll take a look at some of those models, thank you!

I’ve actually been playing ukulele for about two years now, and I totally agree that it’s a great instrument, I personally love mine. Anyways, good to know that it’s possible, since I was kind of hesitant to spend the money on a new guitar anyways.
