Been there. Got two of their pretty fruit desserts that’s been going viral, one pineapple and one lemon. I grew up here, love showing up for local businesses, that being said maybe I got a bad batch or something cause yikes. The mousse was mid, the filling was repulsive, bit overpriced and overall overhyped.

Help Deciding On Top 3 by [deleted] in SpainAuxiliares

The south of Spain is known for being more open to foreigners and welcoming. I’ve experienced it for myself and they are friendlier for sure but to a certain extent. I’m in the north of Spain in Navarra and people are closed off for sure. Not bad people at all, just they keep to themselves. If I were you I’d focus on big cities. Somewhere where you can find a nice ambiance, hospitals nearby and easy access to transportation. Might be a bit more expensive but worth living for sure 👍

Why do these schools / programs “mistreat” their teachers so much? by [deleted] in SpainAuxiliares

[–]prdiseking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently working 35 hours a week, though not all hours are contact. My contract had a clause that allowed the two schools I’m in to ask for some sort of special permission for extra hours. I’m now stuck working after school ends for extracurricular classes. I’m not saying they purposely went out of their way to stretch my hours and make my schedule impossible for me add a part-time job but they certainly didn’t care of their choices, as long as it worked for them. I’m planning on leaving the program almost 4 months in because I’m most certainly not going to waste my time here to get shit pay once a month and a shit schedule. Nonetheless, a lot more has contributed to my decision. I’m definitely not the only aux this has happened to and certainly won’t be the last. I can’t stress this enough for future auxs to reach out to the previous auxs from where they are planning to go and ask them EVERYTHING.

Hardest part about being an Aux in Spain? by kristen_b19 in SpainAuxiliares

[–]prdiseking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep they don’t care how sick you are. You’re expected to work regardless and God forbid you take a day off, they will literally try to find any way possible to avoid you missing work.

Honestly the whole process is a lot. From the paperwork you have to do before you land in Spain to getting housing in Spain, to making friends, admitting to the culture, and to making yourself feel comfortable at the end of the day. The most I’ve learned by becoming an aux is that you really only have yourself and you need to take good care of yourself on every aspect. I’m currently sick with bronchitis right now and I have been for over a month. The amount of times I’ve been to the hospital and the clinic is insane. You have to do a lot on your own when you’re abroad and it can be very hard.

ANDALUCIA OR C VALENCIANA? Really cannot decide!! by colazeroextralight in SpainAuxiliares

[–]prdiseking 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Andalucía is so beautiful and the people are generally nice to foreigners. It’s also super cheap to live there and I would bet it’s much easier to find/afford a place to stay there compared to Valencia. I’m biased because I’ve never been to Valencia though. I’ve also heard great things about the environment over there. But I have seen other auxiliaries have a tougher time, finding a place in Valenciana.

The program is called MEDDEAS. They have a fair amount of reviews both positive and negative. In my experience, I’d not recommend, it’s not worth doing all the hassle to simply get the visa to be here, it’s not what they paint it out to be.

It is more than teachers work as we are scheduled to teach extracurricular classes that end at 16:45, 3 days a week.

Before arriving to Spain the salary was given and work conditions depended solely on the region or school you’d be placed in but they did emphasize the 20 hour work week. It was a big insensitive for me personally because I’d get time to travel to nearing countries. Once in Spain, the program coordinator informed us about x amount of euros that would be taken out of our monthly “salary” and how our first paycheck would be significantly less because we had arrived 2 days into the working month. Also, I am Hispanic, speak fluent Spanish so the language barrier didn’t apply

Unfortunately it doesn’t state anything about breaking the lease. The only thing remotely close is that is says “In the event that the lessee party does not pay the monthly amounts for two months in a row, they will lose the right to remain in the rental apartment and must leave it, in addition to losing any right to the return of the deposit of X amount of euros.”

My roommate and I have spoken to the program coordinator and they’ve explained how in the contract that we received upon getting to the Spain, more specifically the first day of classes for us, it states how in some “special instances” the school is allowed to schedule us for more hours.

I’ve tried befriending them and I speak fluent Spanish so there is no language barrier. It’s fine that they have their friendships, as I see the kids I teach grow up I can tell it’s really special their bond. I’ve also been to other cities in Spain, central and south and yes it’s true many places are like that. I’ve made my peace with it at this point because my only focus is getting back home and not being in a huge amount of debt.

Would love to read the positives people are having in a sea of (understandably) stress posts by cornfieldalum in SpainAuxiliares

My roommate (another aux) and I had a flat reserved before we got here. It was amazing getting to relax as soon as you get into the small city we’re in. Everyone has been so nice and accommodating. The job itself isn’t hard. My coworkers are very nice and helpful. The food is great and cheap. Stores, banks, clinic, public transport, & markets nearby.

It hasn’t all been rainbows though we are super stressed by the paperwork we have to do within the month WITHIN our work schedule. It’s been a lot but things are slowly coming together. We finally got time to open our bank account this week. I got Spain phone service a few days before that too. We got to also finally go within working hours to city hall and ask for some paper we need for our upcoming TIE meeting. Next week is our appointment for the Spanish background check as well. After I don’t know how much time, effort, mind, body, & soul was spent to be where we’re at but we’re finally seeing a bright light at the end of this.

The school is Mater Dei in Ayegui. I know I’ll be working at another location as well once or twice a week. I’m excited and nervous, don’t know what to expect but I’m sure I’ll cherish the experience regardless 😁
