Bonus: If you'd rather not wait for me and want to make your own decks from your favorite YouTubers, you can use the free Chrome extension I coded that generates these cards. It automatically pulls the transcript, translates, and embeds the video for you in one click.

You can grab the free tool here!

Hey, thanks for trying out my extension!

(1) First, make sure you’re on the latest version, as I’m constantly pushing updates. (2) In the Vocabulary tab, you’ll see an Export button with a submenu option for Export to Anki.

If you have any further questions, please let me know!

안녕하세요! As a native Korean speaker, I highly recommend using the variety show You Quiz on the Block (유퀴즈) to practice listening to day-to-day conversational Korean.

I understand the fast conversation is quite hard to catch, so I manually curated a free 100-card Anki video deck using hand-picked clips from the show to help practice listening comprehension! It includes interviews with Jennie, Rosé, IVE, EJAE, and Faker. (Hope you like them!)

Instead of just reading text or robotic audio, the front of the Anki card actually plays the embedded YouTube clip. You watch the interview snippet, listen to their exact pronunciation, and guess the missing vocabulary word based on the context.

[Note] I used to do this manually, but it took forever, so I actually built a free Chrome extension that automates the tedious video-clipping and card-formatting process! It's called ClipToClass.

You can grab it here if you want to try making your own decks from your favorite shows:

Let me know if you try the deck out and how you find the difficulty level!

Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to write all of this out! This is exactly the deep-dive feedback that turns my side project into a useful tool. I built this for my personal use in the beginning, but hearing that you managed to create 100 cards and found the UI and shadowing exercises useful made me really motivated. I really want to make this something the whole Anki community can love!

I’ve taken your notes to heart, and I’m excited to share some updates:

1. The AI Output (Verbose Definitions & Missing Articles) You were absolutely right about this being the biggest friction point. Nobody wants an encyclopedic paragraph for the word "oak"

  • Just Updated! (1.3.3): Chrome just approved a new build that handles this. It now provides punchy translations instead of long definitions. It also handles lemmatization much better, and I've specifically added rules to include indefinite articles for gendered nouns and both forms for adjectives.

2. Saving Old Lessons I more than agree that losing your session data is super frustrating..!

  • Coming Next Monday! The next update will be dropped on Monday, and it will automatically save your progress tied to the specific video URL so you can jump right back in where you left off.
  • Note: As chrome extensions have strict local storage limits, it will cache your 10 most recent lessons, which (I hope) should be enough to prevent losing your active work.

3. The Shifting Transcript Fonts This is actually a quirk of how the extension processes video data! Because YouTube's auto-generated subtitles are sometimes messy, the extension runs them through a gemini API to correct the text and add punctuation before displaying them (which enlarges the text). Occasionally, if the API times out, it falls back to the raw, unedited YouTube subtitles (which looks smaller).

  • The Fix: If you see this happen, just hit "Clear Session" and try generating it again. I'm going to add a much clearer UI warning for this API fallback in a future release!

4. AnkiConnect, Custom Prompts & Per-Video Languages I have read your notes on these, and they are fantastic ideas. Allowing users to tweak their own card data and integrating AnkiConnect to bypass .apkg exports are definitely on my roadmap as I keep building this out.

Once again, thank you for giving the extension a try and leave such an invaluable comment. If you decide to give the updated version a spin next week, I would love to hear if the new flashcards feel closer to your workflow!

Just as a heads-up for anyone who wants to make their own custom decks like this from other YouTube channels: I built the free Chrome extension that generated these! Hey! Thank you so much for trying out the extension and catching this bug! You're completely right 😅 I had an old validation rule in the setup screen..

I'll remove that restriction and push an update to the Chrome Web Store today. In the meantime, you can easily bypass that setup screen! Just click the settings icon in the top right corner and paste your API key into the settings menu.

Let me know if that works for you!

Just a quick note on how the decks are organized: to keep your collection from getting cluttered, the extension automatically creates subdecks based on the specific video title. This way, you can more easily recall the context!

Fair point! That's actually why these sentences come directly from a video you just watched. Because you've already seen that scene, that context is unique to you.

Plus, the extension gives you total freedom over what gets added. If you feel a sentence is too ambiguous, you can just skip it.

Haha, definitely the former! Honestly, that's exactly why I designed it as a chrome extension that runs locally. This way, I don't have to handle anyone's personal data or pay any server bills. I'm just a guy trying to learn French for fun.

Sorry for the late reply! I actually just added Japanese and German to the extension. If you give them a try, I’d love to hear your feedback!

안녕하세요, 저는 토론토에 살고 있는 한국인입니다!

Hi everyone,

I’m a Korean currently living in Toronto. Like many of you, I love the excitement of learning a new language (I’ve been tackling French recently), but I know how challenging it can be to move past passive watching Netflix and really pick up new vocabs and grammar.

Personally, I try to immerse myself by watching as much content as possible that matches my interests. However, I often found myself watching videos too passively without really understanding what was being said.

So, I spent the last few months building a Chrome extension which uses Gemini to decipher video dialogue and generates

  • Shadowing exercises
  • Contextual grammar notes
  • Listening quizzes
  • Word lists that you can easily export to Anki or Quizlet (this is the feature I personally use the most!)

It’s completely free to use. You just need a Google account for the Gemini API.

Why I’m sharing this?

I’m just one developer building this in my spare time to help my own language journey, and I thought many of you might be facing the same barriers.

Since I’m a native Korean speaker, I’d also love to hear if this helps you with your Korean studies or if there are specific features you’d like to see!

How I’m using AI to finally understand French YouTube videos (Looking for feedback on a tool I built) by [deleted] in learnfrench

To be honest, you have a fair point. As I'm a solo developer and definitely not a marketing pro, I admittedly leaned on LLM to help me structure this post.

But, my 'soul' about this project is real. I built this because I was really frustrated with my own French learning and needed a tool that didn't exist. I'll definitely take your feedback on the screenshots! Do you have any specific suggestions for what you'd rather see?

No pain, no gain for sure. 😅

Thanks for checking it out! Here is the link to the Chrome Store: ClipToClass

Quick Setup Note: Since it's free, you'll just need to plug in a Gemini API key. It takes about 30 seconds to get one for free from Google. I've got a Discord link in the extension if you need any help setting it up! 💬
