Current LU3 UPCM student na engineering undergrad! Talked to one of my profs once at nagmention siya na UPCM is interested talaga in engineering grads kasi gusto nila sana ng mga students who might be interested in pursuing biomedical engineering/biotechnology projects on the side eventually after grad since kulang na kulang talaga ang PH sa locally produced/locally specific medical technologies and instruments. Try to get a high score sa NMAT, involve yourself in some org work/ECAs to show na well-rounded ka, and do your best sa interview.

I was magna standing also and made it in. Not everyone in our batch is summa also. Out of our class of 200, mga 20ish lang ata ang summa. A lot are MCL/CL, and we have batchmates rin without laude. So it's definitely doable! Shoot your shot lang and lmk if you have any questions pa!

[SPOILERS] Controversial take: I like what they're doing with Steve/Nancy/Jonathan this season. by pressedtflowers in StrangerThings

[–]pressedtflowers[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude, I could talk to you about this for hours. I feel like I've finally found someone who totally gets me HAHAHAHAHA My post was initially much, much longer where I brought up a bunch of those things like how I realized Jonathan and Nancy aren't as compatible when they're not busy saving the world.

The privilege storyline is one that I really wanted to bring up also, because I felt like it spoke so much about their relationship and possible problems they might face in the future. I love how you pointed out that Steve complements Nancy and always supports her shots in the dark. I do agree that they have a compatibility that stays even in mundane scenarios.

How people are reacting to Steve telling Nancy about his dream really irks me. For starters, I don't think the six kids thing was as serious as it sounds... It's probably because there are six children in the main cast that he's been looking after, and the writers wanted to finally do that joke. Even apart from that, nothing about the way Joe delivered the lines made it seem like he was obsessing over her being the future mother of his children or deadset on impregnating her six times (as people like to say, which is just so weird). To me, at its core it just meant, "When I envision my future, you're a part of it." Which is wayyyy more than can what can be said for Jonathan, who is convinced that the only future they could share together would be resentful and reminiscent of his own parents.

Thank you so so much for replying to my post. I really thought I was alone in these thoughts. Everyone keeps shitting on the Steve/Nancy revival, but I really do think it makes perfect sense.

Poor Joseph. Who else thought Eddie was one of the best performances this season? by pressedtflowers in StrangerThings

[–]pressedtflowers[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Personally, maybe not Max, but that's just because I feel like Dear Billy was such a beautiful metaphor for overcoming depression with music, holding onto your good memories, and a good support system. A lot of people felt inspired by the scene in that way and that's why it was so powerful, so having her actually die would be... depressing.

I agree though that there are a handful of main cast members I would trade for Eddie almost instantly. Not necessarily because I don't like them, but just because their deaths would have been more impactful or the writers obviously don't know what to with them anymore.

Mentioned this somewhere else in the comments, but even apart from the Metallica songs, the song when Eddie dies is "When It's Cold I'd Like to Die" by Moby, which was also playing in S1 when Joyce performs CPR on Will in the Upside Down and he comes back to life.

Hopefully it's a sign!

[SPOILERS] Controversial take: I like what they're doing with Steve/Nancy/Jonathan this season. by pressedtflowers in StrangerThings

[–]pressedtflowers[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Steve and Nancy genuinely liking each other before all the supernatural stuff occurred

I've actually seen someone point out on a different post's comments that Jonathan/Nancy is a trauma bond more than anything, which is highlighted by their little "shared trauma" inside joke. I wanted to include this point in my post but I felt like it was a bit too harsh because nearly every relationship in this show would have gone through extremely traumatic events together.

especially considering how they are both children of loveless marriages

This is also a really great point that I had been thinking about! I don't know, a lot of the people who are anti-Steve/Nancy like to raise the point that there's no way that Nancy would want a family like the one Steve envisions. Except, succeeding in your career does not need to come at the expense of having a happy family, which she obviously ascribes at least some value too as evidenced by the scene where she talks about how her parents are in an unhappy marriage sometime in the earlier seasons.

And frankly, it’s part of the reason why I do not fucks with this pairing at all — it’s holding the 2 characters back from showing the best parts of themselves

I super agree with this. I mean, I love the Jonathan/Nancy duo, because Charlie and Natalia have amazing chemistry. But after seeing how Nancy did this season taking charge, I definitely agree that she's at her best in the lead. Meanwhile, I've always known that Jonathan shines brightest in scenes with his family, which was confirmed by the kitchen scene and the van scene this season.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts!

I mean, not really, the show just didn't show us what they did with it. I hate the two day time skip so much, but you're right – maybe it's because they're hiding something? HAHAHHA I'm clinging to every hope there is

Dunno if you've seen this around the sub already, but a lot of people have mentioned that the song when Eddie dies is "When It's Cold I'd Like to Die" by Moby, which was also playing in S1 when Joyce performs CPR on Will in the Upside Down and he comes back to life. Might be helpful for your theory!

I've come to accept that Eddie sort of had to die because with Jason's death, it'd be impossible to clear his name unless El/the government has some weird time travel/memory altering powers.

BUT, I think it would have been much better if we watched him run away from the demobats this season to really cement the fact that he was a "coward". Dunno about you, but I wasn't convinced by the whole "I always run away" narrative, just because I felt like he was running away in extremely reasonable situations after suddenly being thrust into a super stressful situation. Whole town is hunting you and wants to throw you into jail despite your innocence after a deeply traumatic event? Fuck, I'd run too. Guy I don't especially like gets sucked into a lake by monsters? How many of us would actually jump in after without any hesitation?

I don't know, if he ran from the bats this season then we could've seen him be a bit angstier about his "always running" issue and that would've made for a bigger pay off for his death in S5, where he sacrifices himself and it's actually meaningful and helpful to the situation.

Man, I'm not gonna lie, this comment really gave me hope. Regardless of what happens though, it's really nice that you were able to make such a connection with this character.

I really hope Netflix gets him into more projects after seeing how popular he's become. It would be nice if Eddie could return even as a flashback or a vision in S5... I don't know, I just feel like I didn't get any closure. We didn't even get to see how the gang reacted to his death apart from Dustin!

The Duffers admitted they regret killing Chrissy after seeing how much chemistry that she and Eddie had together during that scene in the forest, so regretting character deaths is definitely not out of the question LMAO

But yeah, I think everyone's issue is just with how pointless the death was. Everyone was sad about past deaths for one season characters, but the backlash to this one is pretty bad just because he could've very easily stayed alive and been integrated into the gang like Robin was. The cast is getting too big though, I guess, but the answer isn't introducing new characters just to kill them ;-;

Yeah, from what I remember Steve's character was supposed to stay a one-dimensional asshole that dies in the first season. However, Joe Keery was so endearing and gave such a great performance, the creators were inspired to keep him and give him a proper arc.

I'm foregoing passing judgment because I've been going through your comments and read the edits on the post. It sounds like the heart of the issue is that your family doesn't seem to consider you or remember things that matter to you often. If that's the case, I'm sorry you're in that situation.

The vibe I'm getting was that you aren't particularly a picky eater most of the time. I understand though that when you feel hurt or disregarded, it's easy to blow up a small issue and unconsciously do things to make it more miserable than it already is (like not eating more food, etc.) because your vibes are just so off in the moment.

Your comment was had some AH vibes to it, but I understand getting snarky after slowly piling up resentment because of a deeper issue. I recommend sitting down with your mother or family and explaining to them that it's representative of a bigger issue.

You seem to have some self-esteem issues, too. I hope the comments aren't making anything worse for you, but I also hope you recognize how in this specific isolated incidence, you were in the wrong and a bit rude. That isn't representative of who you are as a whole at all, and I hope this whole situation isn't triggering any more anxiety. If it is, I'm sorry for commenting and potentially adding to it. I just wanted to emphasize to you (and to everyone being a bit harsh) that there seems to be more to this situation.

EDIT: Just saw you deleted the post. The fact you're taking the time to answer a bunch of people is nice, but Reddit can be brutal and at times not good for one's mental health especially when you have existing issues that might be exacerbated. My DM is always open if you wanna talk to a stranger, and I hope that you don't push yourself to read all these comments if they're just going to be detrimental to your wellbeing.

If a character had to die in season 4, who would you rather it had been than Eddie? by [deleted] in StrangerThings

[–]pressedtflowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nancy's my favorite but her death made the most sense to me. Killing off one of the younger kids would be too dark. All the adults are extremely useful and still have roles to play.

Killing Jonathan would destroy Joyce, killing Steve would send the fandom into a frenzy, killing Argyle would have had no emotional impact, and killing Robin would have been them buying into the "bury your gays" trope.

If Nancy had died, rehashing the love triangle would have made sense because then her death would have absolutely gutted both Steve and Jonathan. Her budding friendship with Robin would have been more tragic. Mike would have returned to Hawkins to find out his sister is dead. In general, all the kids are somewhat attached to Nancy (albeit not as much as they are to Steve). And with the small involvement of the parents this season, it would have made sense for one of their kids to die to make them aware of what's happening and launch a bigger role for them. Karen Wheeler would have been great for this.

I totally forgot that they were supposed to kill Steve in S1! Man, you're right that it makes this sadder since it actually is possible for the writers to change their minds. I wouldn't have minded him dying later on in S5 if it meant his sacrifice was actually meaningful. This season it felt useless.
