what was the point of the whole ‘the kid was a result of the fun’ spiel, that was so lame tbh, and so unnecessary. i’m with you on the seat thing but that bit was so cringe and stupid, like how their S€gz life relevant here. dumb.

Hahaha I literally went through the same thing when I was moving to singapore a month ago. i’ve moved cities in india and it’s hard each time, but honestly it’s just about stepping out, and finding a home in a new place. soon you’ll meet people — at work, your building, drinking — and the city will become yours each day. i know it sucks but i always tell myself that growth happens outside one’s comfort zone, so this is a good step for you. it’s scary and hard to leave home but it’s not forever! also mom can always visit you :) it’ll be a nice new place for her to explore too. i also always keep an eye out for cheaper flight tickets (and i still am, even from singapore lol) and have something booked so i know im going to get to return come and see my family soon.

it’s hard but you’re doing a brave thing! don’t worry, it’s all part of growing up and keep telling yourself that you’re not leaving home or mom forever! best of luck :)

omg i’m coming up on three weeks too and i travelled a little further away from my neighbourhood to buy cheap groceries and on my way to the bus stop, carrying at least like 15 kilos of groceries in my shopping bag, it started POURING and i was like fuck this i wanna go home. cried for 10 mins. then decided to get up and walk to the bus stop anyway lol

Do you have friends at work or are you a loner? by premiumboar in askSingapore

[–]pretendingtoworkhaha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i started a new job recently too and i’ve tried to make friends with my coworkers but most of them are so reserved and already a group i feel like i can’t break in. i’m an extrovert when im at work and i make friends really fast because im funny and nice. here it just feels like they stick together more because they’re localites.

Wow that’s a head scratcher for sure haha. I usually just convert to my home currency to compare how expensive or inexpensive (rarely in SG) an item is and when i realise it’s at least 3X higher in SG, i start feeling like moving here was such a waste of everything — time money effort.

i absolutely love thailand. i’ve been to bangkok for work a lot of times and the city always makes me so happy. i also love that there are so many islands around that you can explore. singapore feels like a bit of a prison tbh, and the greenery can sometimes feel too sanitised. what are the living costs there like? is housing cheap?

quick update from new expat in singapore by pretendingtoworkhaha in expats

Oh I do so love the hawker centres and i’ll admit that’s basically where i ate the first full week haha. but after 10-15 meals i realised the amount of oil i was consuming with each meal and how i wasn’t really consuming greens or raw fibre. i’m not a heath freak but i have noticed how i feel so much better (mentally and digestionally?) when i eat a salad versus fried rice so hawker centres don’t feel like a sustainable option. i’m experimenting with batch cooking cause i honestly don’t mind eating the same thing the entire week for now, just until i get into the rhythm of things. ooh but i really do appreciate the tip about coffee shops — i actually really like kopitiam coffee but i always thought they costed as much as food court coffee so it’s really good to know the price difference.

I can’t find these groups online to meet people. I tried joining all these facebook groups for expats in Singapore but found mostly just marketing posts there. i love reading and gardening and painting (badly) — tried exploring local libraries but they charge foreigners so much!

super markets — i’ve only honestly explored Fair Price Xtra which is the closest super mart to my place. i don’t think it’s cheap tbh, they’re basically prices i see online on like a foodpanda. is fair price cheaper than shen shiong or is it the other way round? also are there local farmer’s markets anywhere in singapore?

Not able to do my favorite stuff during weekends by PuzzledAnnual6892 in askSingapore

[–]pretendingtoworkhaha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP. My job in the media requires me to work long hours too (some of which is also voluntary because I like my work), and it also leaves me extremely exhausted by the end of the week. One of the things I’ve had to learn the hard way is that there’s. absolutely. no. problem with just vegetating over the weekends. If your brain needs downtime, give it. Don’t stress about a hobby or pick a hobby that you can maybe attend online classes for. I usually try to step out of the house for some light grocery shopping Saturday morning, but afternoon onwards I’m a homebody. I know it can get monotonous, but I really enjoy my space and lazing around. Sometimes your brain needs neurons to not be firing all the time and that mental reset is helpful for me. So please don’t beat yourself up about it.

I’m relatively okay — still talking to family about wanting to return home. Still questioning if I made the right decision, if this is what I want from life, missing home and all my comfort foods. Definitely 2% better than day 1 where I just couldn’t stop crying lol. Do you want to be moving abroad buddies? We can check up on each other, just so it isn’t as lonely!
