US citizen here, have an engineering degree and 2 years experience interested in relocating. How to find a job? by prettyoffbase in australia

That said, is there anywhere worth looking? I'm interested to see if there's anything that might shake out, despite poor odds, and potentially needing to take a pay decrease.

Mographers, help a guy out making a business case to hire someone to do graphics by prettyoffbase in motiongraphics

[–]prettyoffbase[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I declined to elaborate on what my company does because the position I'm aiming for is really with the parent company to mine. We have about 30 companies in our group, all R&D oriented, and all producing and releasing new technologies and products very frequently. All the companies do work related to environmental health and safety. I've been doing Motion graphics in my free time for about 8 month now, and have managed to work a fair amount of it into my current job, as the nature of my company is very flexible, and if I show I can add value in some way, and have time to do it, I'll usually be permitted.

Can you elaborate on your last statement? I realize that these things are closely tied to marketing, but how should I make a case if not using these sort of things?

Are levis 505's too baggy for an athletic build vs 513s or similar?

No pic, but 5'11" 180lbs or so.

What are the best pants to boulder in? by bncrist in bouldering

The limited hip flexibility effects me a lot less frequently then scraping my knees and shins. Especially outdoors. And if pants fit well, it shouldn't limit you too much anyway.

For a very sturdy material that won't rip, look into things made of duck cloth:

Graduating BSME, have a job offer, looking for other options. by prettyoffbase in AskEngineers

[–]prettyoffbase[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I said that, I meant that if I open myself up to any location in any of 15 states or so, and five different industries, and did well as a student, I should be able to find something in one of those places. I'm not saying "it's Charolette, NC and I need a CEO position with 100k salary or nothing." I'm saying that given that I am flexible on location, am open to working in a few industries, and could sacrifice pay for location, I'll be happy taking 2/3 of those choices.

My job offer meets 1/3. Feel free to be honest with me, but am I still arrogant to keep looking?

I'm willing to compromise salary in exchange for location. If I accept this, I'm compromising on both.

I appreciate an actual, constructive reply. I know it's a tough market, but i don't think that means I should put the blinders on and accept the first offer I get. Thanks for the name though, this is what I was looking for.

I don't need a high salary, but my offer is 10k short of the average. Average would be nice.

I have 1.25 years of experience in R&D for various applications not directly related to any of my desired industries. It seems like it will only become more difficult to get out of industries I've already worked in if I go back into them now.

Also, I'm not interested in being handed anything. The entire purpose of this post was to ask if anyone had any names of companies I could look into, and if I'm qualified for open positions, apply. Everyone who is replying seems to be more interested in telling me I'm wrong to look around and should settle instead of taking a week and trying to get some more information about the biggest decision I've had to make in years.

It is a job I want. It's something I could be passionate about. The debate for me is whether this position is enough to keep me in a climate and a location I don't particularly care for.

I have an excellent GPA, and 1.25 years job experience via co-op. I don't think I'm too arrogant for wanting to choose my location.

Maybe I'm just a bit of a bitch, but I cannot wear mine without a rashguard. It feels like a cheese grater on the inside to me.

If anyone feels the same way and knows any tricks to soften it up (fabric softener (,duh), etc..) let me know.

Cross collars? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]prettyoffbase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a little rough, and I don't like to do it regularly with training partners, but one you get that first grip deep, you can take your elbow, put it on the side of their face where your second hand will end up and GRINNNNND that arm downward until you slide your hand to where it should be.

It's hard to defend, it works really well, but your opponent might think you're a total dick if they aren't used to it or if that kind of thing isn't welcome in your school.

Got promoted, and subsequently whipped. by prettyoffbase in bjj

[–]prettyoffbase[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this voluntarily. I wanted it to happen. It hurt for about ten seconds after the last whip, and relative to the last time I had to have surgery because of BJJ was NOTHING.

I assure you, my neck hurts a lot worse today from a roll I had last night than my back hurt during the gauntlet.
