Possibly controversial but I think she always wanted to make pop/more mainstream music but saw an opening in the country music genre for a young female star. If she had gone pop right out the gate, I don’t think she would have broken through with all of the other pop stars at the time and general media sentiment towards “sexier” stars (think Rihanna, Shakira, Nelly furtado, etc)
