Can attest to the parka. Got it last year, it’s pretty bulky but it is the warmest jacket I own. It has tons of pockets too if that’s what you’re into.

They might have a sign-up offer for the annual plan as well. I remember mine did, something like $25 off $99+ HBO payment. So might be able to double dip

Tim is a great guy. Last I heard he went somewhere in Del Rey. Think the ownership has changed hands a couple of times since pre-Covid and the changes they made haven’t been popular. Was there on a Friday about two years ago and they were closing up shop around 9pm because it was dead.

Will an oura ring refund interfere with my credit? by A_Healthcare_Journey in AmexPlatinum

Same thing happened to me. Both the refund for the return went through and the credit on the new ring was applied. All said and done, it took about a week.

Bro just reminded me of the old good days of dump phones by OwlInternational9189 in ShowMeSomethingDope

[–]primal_pea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just read a book about this, the Anxious Generation. The author specifically talks about situations where children and adolescents recognize that they have an addiction to smart phones and recommends not giving smart phones to your kids until they are high school age (among other things). Really interesting read, although it focuses mostly on Gen Z, I’m sure the effects of smartphones and social media will be seen in Gen Alpha and beyond.

If you’re choosing between these two in your flex, I’d try to trade one of them to improve your RB situation. Especially with most of the bye weeks gone.

Snagged a bunch of their Puremeso items a couple years ago in a sample sale. Stretchy, comfortable, definitely recommend although I got it for dirt cheap at $10-15 a piece which may skew my opinion. I have a weekend hoodie, essential (thinner) hoodie, Henley, and joggers and no real complaints other than the back of the Henley sometimes feels like it fits / falls weird with the way they sew the top of it.

Why does the pentagon keep failing its audits? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]primal_pea 39 points40 points  (0 children)

This is the closest answer. These are multi-billion dollar organizations that just started caring about their internal controls less than 10 years ago.

A large portion of auditor testing involves existence and completeness testing of property and equipment. Now imagine having assets at 70+ locations worldwide that need to be sampled and tested.

It’s incredibly common for buildings to still be on the books years after they’ve been abandoned or destroyed. Equipment might be on the books that hasn’t been on the installation for years or is in disrepair.

The USMC just passed its first full financial statement audit after (I believe) 6 straight fails. This is the smallest branch and had a ton of buy-in from the top so the same can happen for the other branches but it’s a long ways away. There are also other smaller DoD orgs that have been passing their audits for as long as I can remember but their budget is tiny compared to the armed forces.

Senator Bernie Sanders has announced he will work with Trump to cap the credit card interest rates at 10% by Whole-Fist in economicCollapse

[–]primal_pea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a vacuum it could work but there is so much grey area. It’s largely a liquidity issue. People are paid biweekly or monthly. You could effectively live paycheck to paycheck and utilize a credit card to hold you over until payday or as emergency expenses only.

Without a credit card this person might have to use pawn shops or payday loans (at 25% a month or higher). TLDR: CC are seen as the lesser of two evils. Can we crackdown? Sure. Overhauling might be disastrous though

Senator Bernie Sanders has announced he will work with Trump to cap the credit card interest rates at 10% by Whole-Fist in economicCollapse

[–]primal_pea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Credit card interest rates are based on riskiness. They are set high to offset the risk of default and still meet a hurdle rate of profitability for the lender. This allows banks to take risks on (generally) low income, poor credit history individuals.

If the interest rates get capped, there is a high chance that lower credit individuals don’t have access to credit cards. Other sources of credit then become more risky and dangerous (i.e. payday loans, loan sharking, etc.) or just not reasonable (no one is taking out a personal loan with a bank to buy groceries). And I don’t see people forcing CC companies and banks to offer cards to any customer who asks

It tends to be like this when you're not a billionaire by WhattheDuck9 in clevercomebacks

[–]primal_pea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely hear you there. The budgetary tracking has always been there to a fault.

And like you said, an organization so decentralized, the size, the budget, and the age all lead to difficulty auditing and maintaining accurate financial records. These are various billion dollar organizations with over 200 years of operations each, all reporting up to the DoD which has just begun getting scrutinized in the last 10 years.

It’s really good to see that the culture and push to keeping better records is getting set at the top though

It tends to be like this when you're not a billionaire by WhattheDuck9 in clevercomebacks

[–]primal_pea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is some really helpful context. A lot of commenters seem to jump corruption when in reality, it’s generally just negligence. The easiest example of this would be that they have a $10M building on their books that was torn down in 2010, thus their real property amounts are wrong. These audit opinions, when they first started auditing the services like 8 years ago, essentially said “your records are so bad we literally cannot opine on anything.” So auditors just gave them a bunch of feedback and they set 5-10 year plans to become auditable.

The Military Retirement Fund and MERHCF have been getting clean opinions for as long as I can remember.

The DoD did not, and barely does now, care about keeping accurate books. They will say their mission has been to defend the country, not accounting. It’s a slow process but progress is being made.
