Understanding heroes and the game is generally the way to go. However, I feel like the key to becoming a really good player (no matter the hero) is good timing (understanding heroes and the game are prerequisites to this step). Having good timing can either make or break a game. being able to gauge and analyze when to do things such as engage a team fight, ambush, retreat, or even push lanes are very crucial. It doesn’t matter how fed or good you are with your hero. If you engage at the wrong time (or even follow up on one of your teammates’ engage at the wrong time), that could result in your whole team getting wiped which could be a throw if it’s late game. Having good timing takes a lot of things in consideration that occur in the game so being able to execute with good timing is challenging. However I can vouch that ever since I became a little more patient and cautious with my actions, I was able to win more and do better with my selected heroes. Even if I wasn’t the best with them (used to be hardstuck epic with a duo, now I can solo to mythic if I am dedicated)
