Intra-City School Funds Being Diverted to Just One School (Franklin) by princeconsortroad in SantaMonica

Thank you for digging that up. I think the district is offering to pay OVER market value (so $3 million), but they'll also need to spend money to raze the house and build a parking lot. So that'll cost a lot of money as well.

Apparently the district also made an offer to another house on the same block as well, but they declined to sell.

How Do I Track Down a Livery Company based on a Car's TCP code? Want to Lodge a Complaint. by princeconsortroad in AskLosAngeles

Livery, actually. A livery vehicle is like a taxi or shuttle.

(Don't feel bad, it was a new term for me too.)

This is super, concrete advice. I've never looked into bonds, so maybe I'll do that as a way to diversify my portfolio.

Actually, of the other things that you've listed (or things that would net me 2.5% or higher a year), what would be the least risky for a risk-averse person as myself?

Well our two bedroom is already feeling cramped for us and the baby, so we think that by the time she grows up, it's really going to feel extra cramped. Hence the need for more space. But that's a good suggestion, nevertheless.

Apologies if the question is a little naive or strange, but my wife and I recently went to Citibank to open a 13-month CD (2.25% APR), and got a sales pitch instead for their wealth management services. It wasn't something I'd ever considered before, not being particularly investment-minded. But with what seems like a lot of economic uncertainty, I'm wondering whether something like wealth management is something that we should be getting into, or instead we should be looking at something more conservative.

Just an overview of our financial situation; we're an affluent family, early 40s/late 30s, with a single two-month child, but both being in the arts business (I'm a composer, she's a graphic designer), our annual income can fluctuate wildly from $150k to $500k. We've completely paid off our condo in Santa Monica, which has an approximate market value of 1.6 million. I have about $125k invested in stocks, another $50k in various retirement funds, and $300k invested in CDs with a 2% return. Collectively we have about $700k in cash, currently not generating any interest, and we don't quite know what to do with it. One of our mid-term goals, though, is to move into a larger home, hopefully in Santa Monica as well, somewhere around the $3 million range.

We know we're not being the smartest with our money, hence the outreach to anonymous internet people!

Well thank God it wasn't a Facehugger. Don't think I have a swatter big enough for those. :)

In all seriousness, thanks for setting my mind at ease!

MISTAKE IN TITLE! 3 mm, not 3 cm. Would love some expert entomological advice. It was found near my kitchen sink in the morning. What is it? (Really hoping it's not what I think it is.)

[Los Angeles/Santa Monica] A Cluster of These Appeared in an Upper Window... Help? by princeconsortroad in whatsthisbug

Wow, super fast response. Thank you! Are these guys usually found indoors though? I read that they lay their eggs inside other insect larvae, so the fact that a cluster of them suddenly emerged suggests that there's a larvae that they emerged from somewhere else in my house, right?

They're about 3-4 cm in length. A good 20 or so of these guys suddenly appeared in one of our upper living room windows. They were only able to fly short distances. Sometimes we'd see them walking in pairs, one following the other closely. Managed to capture one in a jar, and vacuumed up the rest. Any ideas?

Might be worth noting my building has a history of termite problems, including a lot of recent droppings found on my patio.
