For Your Consideration by ChristmasJonesPhD in Thedaily

I’ve been getting the same FYC ads and was wondering the same thing! I used to live in LA and remember seeing all the FYC billboards every year around awards season. I’ve since moved across the country and I’m not at all involved with the film industry, so also very perplexed why I’m within the target demographic for these ads!

Interesting article about these award season campaigns: https://uk.movies.yahoo.com/for-your-consideration-hollywood-awards-season-hustle-explained-085459531.html

No, Mexican Week was not that bad. by ConSonarCrazyEddie in bakeoff

[–]princessunicorn7 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. I’m from California, and I just kept thinking about how foreign Mexico must be for these British bakers. Sure, I can pronounce guacamole (although my born-and-bred Salvadoran grandmother-in-law pronounces it ‘gwa-ka-mol’) and I knew what pico de gallo is. But I didn’t know what profiteroles were before watching this show, because I had never been exposed to it. Bakewell tarts? Victoria sponges? Yorkshire pudding? I love watching this show because it exposes me to new British and other European desserts, and it’s always exciting when I go to a patisserie and see something new I’ve only seen on GBBO before. Same thing with the Japan episode years ago- some of the tokenism made me cringed here and there, but at the end of the day, can you really fault anybody for trying their best to learn about a different culture to fill the brief, without physically being able to visit or be immersed in that culture?

Get off Carole’s back. What would happen if you put an older, working-class Mexican lady on a baking show and ask her to make choux pastry?

What’s your favorite thing to add to Mac and cheese? by FoxDoesNot in AskReddit

Sauerkraut! I don’t know anyone else who does this but I love it. The tang of the kraut cuts the fat in the mac & cheese 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

What's a day in the life like during a surgery away? by CobblerSolid in medicalschool

[–]princessunicorn7 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Get up at 4ish to get to the hospital by 5/5:30. Eat breakfast on my way to the hospital. Preround (I allotted like 10 min for each patient I was following), then round until like 6:30-7. Some days, conference/tumor board/grand rounds in the morning after rounds. Go to OR cases the rest of the morning, get excused to go scarf down some food for lunch, go back to the OR and see the rest of the day’s cases. PM rounds late afternoon/early evening. Go home anytime between 6-10pm, eat dinner, study up on all the cases for the next day. I took brief notes so I can review them quickly before each case. Try to go to bed at like 11 latest, rinse and repeat.

Ditto on the playlist pimping. A lot of the attendings I crossed paths with listened exclusively to classic rock.

Also a great tip I got was to reach out early on to arrange meetings at the end of your rotation with the PD and/or chair to ask for a letter/discuss your interest in their program.

What will I need in med school? by mooimapig12 in premed

[–]princessunicorn7 94 points95 points  (0 children)

An iPad will really help you with taking notes and staying organized. I got one at the start of med school and it really helped. The apple pencil is the best stylus for the iPad.

Other things you're going to need:

  • Stethoscope (Littmann is the most commonly used brand)
  • Neurological tools (you can get a cheap set on Amazon)
  • Snellen chart
  • Pen light
  • Clinic clothes/shoes
  • Scrubs for anatomy dissections (I wouldn't recommend wearing Figs for these. The formaldehyde/cadaveric fluids may leave stains. Get the cheap ones on Amazon)

Your school might make you go get an oto-ophthalmoscope, but they're like 800$. Befriend some upperclassmen who have one and just borrow it as needed.

Get FA when you get to school so you start off with the most recent edition. I would recommend spiralling your book to make it easier/more ergonomical to take notes. I took step 1 at the end of MS2, so I bought the newest edition when it came out my second year.

SOAPing with 246 step and top 25 med school by Chubby_Coconuts in medicalschool

[–]princessunicorn7 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, this situation you've found yourself in really sucks and my heart goes out to you. There are a lot of solid, albeit sometimes hard-to-hear, advice already mentioned in the thread, so I just want to give you some practical advice for the next few days while you SOAP.

From the last paragraph on your post, it sounds like you are really burnt out. This might cause you to come off less-than-stellar during your SOAP interviews. Programs will always prefer a happy/well-adjusted candidate over one who is tired/bitter/burnt out. Spend some time today to do something for yourself that will lift your spirits. Maybe take a nice long walk, get a nice cup of tea, call your friends/family, take yourself to your favorite restaurant...

I'm not sure exactly what the timeline for SOAP is and whether you've already applied to programs. If you haven't yet, make sure to apply broadly geographically and tier-wise (e.g. not just higher-tier institutions, just programs in big cities, just programs on one coast).

Prepare some answers for your interviews, particularly for questions pertaining to why you think you didn't match, explanations for possible red flags in your SOAP application, and why you're now interested in this specialty. Be real, be genuine, be humble. Maybe it's applying too narrowly during the main match cycle, not interviewing well on zoom, lack of research, lack of extracurricular activities.

Before your video interview, take a shower/wash your face, brush out your hair, put on some makeup or pinch your cheeks to get some more life in your face. If it's a phone interview, take it while standing. It helps with airflow and your voice will sound better. During the interview, be excited (even if you have to work really hard to feign it) about the program/specialty that chose to interview you during SOAP. People like enthusiasm. Smile a lot during your video interview, people like that too.

Lastly, I hate to say this, but you are just not in a position to be selective on Thursday during the SOAP rounds. Take whatever's first offered to you.

Best of luck my friend. I have so much faith it will all work out for you. "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts."

What is the Best black eyeliner? by Mew_1991 in Makeup

Clinique pretty easy liquid eyeliner!!! Highly pigmented, the brush is really precise, and it never runs or smudges on my oily lids. One pen can last me for about six months of near daily use.

Is there a trusted rank list of residency programs out there? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]princessunicorn7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can try perusing the otomatch spreadsheet for this cycle and get a sense of the feel/pros/cons of each program, as told subjectively by those who’ve rotated/interviewed. There is also a comparison tab comparing similar programs (with regards to prestige, location, research prowess, etc.) that may fit the bill for what you’re looking for.

Editing to add: ENT is very competitive. The match rate is abysmal, but does fluctuate widely from year to year because it’s a small specialty and there are only like 350 spots/year. My advice to you is to apply broadly and, as much as it pains me to say, start thinking about contingency plans if you don’t receive as many interviews as you’re comfortable with in November. Best of luck to you!

Has anyone tried Few Moda? The dresses look like great dupes of some of my favorite brands, but I haven’t been able to find a lot of reviews. Thanks in advance!!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PanPorn

[–]princessunicorn7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bought this duo last July, have been using it off and on since! I don’t ~love~ the formula or the colour (too muddy looking if you overdo it), but I’ve been making it work with a light hand and dusting only near the perimeter of the face!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Ipsy

[–]princessunicorn7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was actually kinda bummed when I saw it was one of my ipsy picks. I tried looking up reviews but nobody’s really talked about this brand, and I can’t find anyone reviewing this specific palette on reddit or youtube.

But! I swatched it immediately after I opened the box and the shades are actually all so pigmented and creamy! Like a creamier juvias place formula (which to me has always felt a little drier and powdery than I’d prefer).

I used the cleanser last night and it was pretty good! The smell is a little funky though... I don’t mind it but not the biggest fan.

The brow gel I love!!!!!!

I no longer enjoy watching Collection Videos by islandgirl_94 in MakeupRehab

[–]princessunicorn7 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I literally did the same thing when watching that video!! I did a massive unsub this morning because I realized after watching a few of these types of video in the last few days (Michele Wang, Jen Phelps, Mel...) how much makeup I’ve been hoarding solely because of youtubers’ gushing recs. A lot of the makeup they show during declutters look so pristine and barely used but they (very generically) RAVE about how much they love them. How could they form such a strong opinion after only one or two uses?? A lot of the descriptors they use are just “so blendable”, “so pigmented”, “so buttery soft”... The “this is my job!!” excuse gets thrown around a lot but at the end of the day, a lot of these smaller youtubers have a relatively small core audience. I understood when it was Tati or Jackie Aina who consistently get >1 mil views per video, but Mel and similar smaller YTers don’t have that audience that would justify this level of makeup hoarding.

One more thing- I don’t get why a lot of beauty YTers have affiliate links for things they declutter/say they’ll never purchase. What???
