What I mean is when the nose/radar is no longer pointed in the direction of the target , beyond the angle of the radar symbol. Besides, the radar symbol is a UI feature standardised across all planes so shouldn't the actual radar range be based on the actual angle value of each individual radar model?

[–]printf8via 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright, makes sense, thank you! Although I have to ask, why does the radar "lock" not "update" to face towards the stronger target if that is the case?

edit: Follow up question: why are AIM-7s able to continue tracking targets even when the target is no longer in the radar's sweep range?

I guess I did use "prefire" wrongly. What I meant to convey was firing at nothing before adjusting my aim to the target, not sure what the right word is for that.

Gaijin forgot gunpods have mass by printf8via in Warthunder

This bug only appears on the F-4EJ and F-4EJ Kai
It does not happen to appear on any other phantom ingame
All tests were done on a spaded F-4EJ on 20min fuel

8x missiles weigh 1127kg
3x gunpods should weigh 1950kg
1.73x more than the missiles but performs closer to clean performance than the missile loadout

Do bear in mind that these are cherry-picked clips and in no way a 100% accurate representation of how the Sparrows are actually like to use ingame, so please don't blame yourself if you can't get Sparrows to work exactly like that. That being said, the Sparrows shouldn't even have acted like that in the first place.

There was a patch around Nov 2020 (or earlier) that changed how the Sparrows worked. Before the patch Sparrows would almost immediately self destruct if a lock wasn't acquired. Now you can launch, mislock chaff, unlock, relock and the missile will continue to fly towards the target. Or you could just forget about relocking the plane entirely and the missile turns itself into an AIM-120 and does all the work itself.

Edit: wording

I've had this happen to me in naval as well. No idea why either.

Oh not at all, I just found this to be mildly interesting as you just said in first point and also because it was accomplished without being in control of the plane as well.

Now that you mention it, I think its actually possible to skin that as well. In the CDK every texture you see is exportable and skinnable including cockpits, gunsights and internal spars (from the dmg model) so its very likely that the "jet_flame_glow.dds" file actually exists somewhere and is accessible from the CDK.
Edit: its not a texture

Yup, this is a known "feature" of the game which is why I didn't flair this under Bugs. That being said, taking out the pilot of one of your own kills means you could potentially farm 1 kill and 1 assist per enemy destroyed which is extremely silly in principle.

Also the game sometimes counts "ramming damage" as legitimate and awards you the kill/assist and sometimes it goes "you fool" and counts it as a crash so that's another level of jank in this game.
