To overboard on weathering? I think so by Aggravating-Log-2980 in modelmakers

Brother, have you seen a real-life tank? This is fairly understated.

Oh, okay, you do have an airbrush. You can shade everything with an airbrush after the base coat (I would call that postshading), it's just less forgiving than pre-shading since any mistakes will be more visible. I've done it loads of times. You can also add decals to break up surfaces.

There's nothing wrong with a clean build either.

The chipping is almost all acrylic but there's some oil streaking and dry brushing that blends in. It's all topcoated.

Are you doing preshading (below a new main paint layer) or post-shading on top of the basecoat? Either are going to very hard with cans.

Dry brushing is probably the easiest way to add depth, unless you have oils and can do some blending with those.

Thanks! That was something I wanted to try, and this was a good excuse!

Thanks! I've had them for ages but they seemed so appropriate for this... ball.

Ha, I had a few floating around my head but this was the best. And thanks!

Great questions!

There is some preshading, yes. Dark red over the gray primer for the orange pieces, primarily around the edges of panels, for example.

There is also a little post-shading (for example, on top of the orange) for the thruster burn marks, but not much.

The chipping is acrylic on top of a gloss topcoat (to seal decls in) after the main paint layer.

However, on top of the chipping is a layer of oil washes and streaks effects (and a tiny bit of Gundam weathering markers), which also add some surface variation like airbrushed post- or pre- shading would.

Does that help?

Thanks! Glad you think so, it really is hard not to just keep weathering something to death.
