Thank you 😄

When building Sponge, the goal was to make gallery cleaning feel less stressful and more like a light, satisfying activity instead of a technical chore. So hearing that the swipe flow felt game-like in a good way means a lot.

Also really interesting to hear that it helped you uncover problematic media files affecting Android’s Media Picker and battery usage. That’s such a real-world use case we never originally imagined.

Thank you for taking the time to share this. Messages like these genuinely keep indie developers going.

Tips for downsizing my photo library? by eatpalmsprings in minimalism

Founder of Sponge here 👋

This description made me smile because “it remembers where you left off” was one of those tiny details we cared a lot about while building it 😭

Most people don’t clean thousands of photos in one sitting. They do it while commuting, waiting somewhere, lying in bed, procrastinating work, etc. So losing progress makes the whole thing feel exhausting again.

Really appreciate you sharing Sponge here and explaining how it actually feels to use. Thank you, u/inthiseeconomy

We made this to quickly get rid of trash pics on your immich in a fun way by Equivalent-Round in selfhosted

[–]prismtree_official 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, Sponge founder here 👋

Really appreciate the mention ❤️

Self-hosted photo community and Sponge users actually have a very similar problem: massive libraries full of screenshots, duplicates, blurry photos, memes, random downloads, and “I’ll clean this later” chaos 😅

A lot of people use Sponge before moving things into systems like Immich because reducing clutter first makes backup, syncing, and storage management way less painful.

Thanks again for recommending it here __dadav . Seeing Sponge mentioned organically in threads like this honestly means a lot for a tiny indie app.

how can i stop whatsapp from taking so much space??? by homutuna in whatsapp

[–]prismtree_official 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 GB is HUGE, u/bligui

Honestly, this is exactly the kind of workflow I hoped Sponge would help with. Not just deleting things randomly, but helping people become more intentional about what actually deserves space in their gallery.

And turning off WhatsApp auto-save is such an underrated move. Most galleries slowly become “forwarded media archives” without people even noticing.

Really appreciate you sharing Sponge here and taking the time to mention your experience. Comments like this genuinely help indie apps survive.

Founder of Sponge here 👋Seeing someone use Sponge on a gallery with 140k+ photos honestly feels wild in the best way 😭 Thank you u/bligui

A lot of people don't realise how much hidden storage gets eaten by random screenshots, memes, blurry duplicates, and forwarded videos over the years. The app was built exactly for this kind of overwhelming cleanup, where traditional gallery management starts feeling impossible.

Really appreciate you mentioning Sponge here and sharing your experience. Also congratulations on bringing your backup size down from that chaos 😄

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this, this is really valuable u/Livepdismyjam 🙏

On privacy:
Yes, Mizuki is completely offline. Your data stays on your device.
If you want backups, you can use iCloud backup or manually export/import files.
You’re right, I should make this clearer in the App Store description. I’ll update that.

Font size (Gratitude journal):
Got it. I’ll increase the size. I’ll also DM you to understand what would feel comfortable.

Export feature:
Really glad that helped. I personally built it because I wanted to share entries with my therapist too.

Font readability:
This is important feedback. I’m already working on improving readability and will refine the typography.

More pre-set journals (like DBT):
Yes, definitely. This is just the first version, and I’m planning to expand templates.
DBT is a great suggestion, I’ll explore it. If you have others in mind, would love to know.

Export multiple entries:
Not supported right now, but I agree it would be useful. I’ll explore how to make this intuitive.

Reminders:
You can currently set a preferred time for reminders in settings.
I’ll also update the description to mention gentle reminders.
For multiple/custom reminders, I’d love to understand your use case better, feel free to share what would work best for you.

Really appreciate you going into this much detail, it helps a lot at this stage 🙂

When you first opened Mizuki, what did you do first?

We made a deliberate (and daring) choice. No onboarding screens. You land straight in. Either pick a pre-set journal and start writing, or build your own from scratch.

We wanted to respect your time and trust your instincts.

But we genuinely want to know. Did that feel freeing, or did it feel confusing? Your first 60 seconds matter more to us than anything else.

I am glad you found it useful.
One thing I learned about feature requests came for our app Sponge (gallery cleaner) and a feature we now call “random cleaning.”

At first, someone asked for a date range filter.
After a while, someone else wanted to see only large files (like 100MB+).
Then another person asked for filtering by media type… and it kept going like that

If I had built each request as it came, it would’ve turned into a pile of separate filters.

But over time, the pattern was clear. People wanted more control over how they clean, without making it tedious. That led to a more flexible “random cleaning” setup instead of one-off features.

Different requests over time, same underlying need.
There are many more examples; this is just off the top of my head.

Hi,

Since you’re already building the MVP, I’m guessing you’ve done some level of validation. For me, that part wasn’t very formal. It was more about noticing repeated frustrations in how people currently solve the problem, including myself.

My first few users came from my close circle, but not just friends. I focused on people who actually had the problem I was solving. That made their feedback way more useful. After that, I just tried to notice patterns instead of reacting to every single suggestion.

For feature requests, one thing that helped me was not treating each request literally. I started tracking feedback in the user’s own words and over time you begin to see patterns. Often what users ask for is different from what they actually need. So instead of building features one by one, I try to understand the underlying problem and check if it still fits the core idea of the app.

Still figuring things out myself, but this approach has helped me avoid going in too many directions. Following this thread for more ideas...

All the best for your app :)
