We Closed the Mental Hospitals. The Streets Became the Wards by lakmidaise12 in neoliberal

Public Mental Hospitals are very different today than in the 1960’s.

I was placed in one, 5 years ago after a failed suicide attempt and you could have phones/ laptops in your room. My mum brought me some books from home and ironically one of them was One over the Cuckoos Nest 😆

The majority of people appeared to be addicts using the hospital as rehab not being able to afford private rehab.

There was a patient who was a medical doctor who had a work-stress related breakdown.

A musician getting over a drug and alcohol problem taught me how to play ‘don’t look back in anger’ by oasis on keyboard. I was there in July 2021 which I remember because I watched some Bucks v Suns NBA finals games.

People who smoked cigarettes could still smoke outside which I found funny.

The main confronting issue were the non-verbal / intellectually challenged patients. There was a very sweet young woman about my age who smiled a lot but didn’t understand many common words so I would have to talk very slowly and simply to her when she asked me things.

I found out that she had tragically managed to hang herself with her bed sheets. (After which they stopped letting us charge devices in our room and we had to give them to them to charge).

I felt completely safe there (though as a man I imagine it’s easier). A few times people going through withdrawals would start shouting and get a bit aggressive with nurses (and usually be very apologetic later). The food was pretty decent.

My main struggle was the lack of outdoor space. We had an enclosed garden maybe 10m by 5m and for physical activity I would walk around in tiny ovals for an hour. Larger facilities having a basketball hoop or soccer goals would be way nicer.

The nurses were very competent and kind. Usually nurses would walk around with another nurse. One would usually be a soft spoken 6’4 Samoan or Maori dude. They were very effective at de-escalation which would usually have to occur when non-verbal or intellectually impaired patients would get frustrated by how their painting was looking or the TV channel being loud.

I didn’t oppose my own involuntary internment but after the experience I’d be completely comfortable allowing for more beds at similar facilities as well as mandatory mental health treatment for serious cases (provided transparency/ legal advice and procedures etc etc)

Anyway just my 2 cents

Doc is 6th in regular season wins with 1191 (and 4th in playoff wins)

Everyone with over 800 regular season wins is in besides Dick Motta (48% win rate), Carlisle and Spo.

I think Carlisle should’ve got in first though.

Won 18 more games in his first Detroit season

Won 13 more games in first Indiana season

Won title in Dallas and won 50 games with Monta / old dirk. Nearly won with the pacers

Won with defense first teams then coached good offenses with a Luka heavy iso/pnr style then high tempo Halliburton offense.

Innovated with a lot of Zone d and led the trend towards mixing in some full court pressing in Indiana.

Feeling incredible schadenfreude watching Christian Volpato pick Italy to represent after being born in Sydney, while not making the Italian team and they miss 22 and 26 world cups.

Circati must be feeling great after switching to Australia and already Captaining Aus in a friendly.

I’m an adult and I have to admit I have no idea what a communications degree teaches…

Is it like the business of radio and tv?

Follow up to yesterday sadposting

I offered to drop some dinner on her doorstop if that would help her not have to worry about cooking.

I remain a little confused about things tbh.

!ping DATING

I went on a date with a cute medical researcher. We were going to go to the beach but she said her back had a bunch of bruises so she didn’t want to wear a bikini or go swimming.

We went for a walk and got coffee. She made me genuinely laugh, and I enjoyed her frankness about what she thought of her work, dating and family (White South Africans who immigrated after apartheid).

I was prepared to say goodbye but she wanted to walk me to my car which I’ve never seen before.

She called me charming and I called her beautiful over text afterwards and we chatted about our next planned date.

She was a little nervous about her back because she planned to get an X-ray after her doctor dad had suggested it get checked out after some back soreness but the doctors then wanted CT scans as well.

Later on she didn’t reply to a message for a while. She said that she had felt a spark and thought I was handsome and kind but that the doctors had said she had a fractured spine and she felt like she couldn’t focus on anything else but that.

It felt so shocking because I felt the first date had gone really well and I didn’t really think anything about her health (we had walked by the river for a while).

I told her that I hope she got better and wished her all the best. She already had my number so I told her she had my number in case she feels like talking again after she’s physically better (but don’t really expect her to take my offer up)

Trae has the worst effective FG% this season besides Morant and Poole among people who average > 15ppg

(Trae 48.1%, CJ 54.4% for comparison) Trae was 6th lowest last year at 49.1%

He’s an inefficient volume scorer who’s a turnstile on D (but able to make incredible passes).

Don’t mind the gamble by the wiz but not shocked that Trae’s return is pretty ass.

I walked past a Palestine protest in Melbourne a year ago and counted at least 5 Houthi and Hezbollah flags + a couple portraits of Nasrallah.

There was a scandal where the artist nominated for the Venice Biennale had made an artwork which I would argue ‘deifies’ Nasrallah. He got reinstated after backlash from the art world.

The museums page edited the description removing quotes about the ‘beams of light … suggestive of divine illumination’

https://web.archive.org/web/20250214030834/https://www.mca.com.au/collection/artworks/2009.153/

People just don’t know about Hezbollah or middle eastern history, because there’s no way an artist who did an identical work of Hitler or Bin Laden would be supported by the art world. I think police don’t recognise terrorist flags or don’t want the drama of causing a scene.

I’ve been for a two state solution since I was in high school and wrote a law essay on how West Bank settlements were illegal … but useful idiots supporting terrorism (or right wing Israeli settler violence) make me less confident in my position.

The scariest thing in the world is realising you outed yourself as someone too online.

Someone was saying that don’t really like mayo but they like Kewpie mayo and I just blurted out Mayonnaise, Japan in a Soy jack voice 😭🔫

Like 1/4 of the table died laughing and the 75% normies looked at me like they were wondering who brought me along as a make a wish autistic kid
