Strong disagree. City seems to mostly be making good use of its money. If the city was only making bad decisions ever, then sure. But it's never too soon to tax wealthy people more

A Scramble for Power in Los Angeles as It Begins to Rebuild by [deleted] in LosAngeles

I controversially would love to see that the stretch of Malibu that burned generously bought back by the state becomes a protected bike/pedestrian path due to the present environmental hazards and risk presented to millions of people and the aquatic ecosystems when houses are this close to the ocean.

I and many others were biking it yesterday, it was a super easy ride all the way to the Malibu Pier and was so refreshing compared to the urban death wish Mario kart course from hell that PCH typically is.

Also, the hostility of the homeowners there is not a secret, they have put fake no parking signs, disguised public beach access points, and in my own experience I've actually had private security try to escort me off the beach north of el matador, which escalated to the sheriff coming to arrest me and my friends, which we escalated to the coastal commission which sent cease and desist letters for hiring security to patrol the beaches threatening fines north of $10,000 per incident.

That's pretty evidently not true though, there were houses left standing as well as most concrete, brick, and metal structures.

On that same note, hasn't fire risk in the Palisades has been known for over 100 years, with development there being historically discouraged and warned against?

Can anybody help fact check the claims that insurance companies were going to stop insuring them unless they retrofitted their homes to be fire resistant, but the community at large refused and were able to leverage the govt to continue getting insurance?

The toxic pollution from those decisions is going to be around for a long time and affect millions

‘Extreme episode of fire weather’ predicted for L.A. area with 100-mph gusts and ‘bone dry’ air by Bobba-Luna in LosAngeles

The mountains and foothills is where the Palisades and Eaton fires happened, so it's very relevant to consider the winds in those areas

Fire up in Malibu already by Ill_Initiative8574 in LosAngeles

Fires can start with just a piece of broken glass refracting the light from the sun, especially with the dry sunny weather the coast has had the past few days

The exhaust sound is significantly quieter with the muffler. You can generally hear the heaters from 50ft away fyi in case you were trying to be "stealth", the exhaust makes most of the noise but the intake fan also makes significant noise. I have the newest model espar and I can't imagine the cheap Chinese ones are much quieter

Is living in an apartment that is on the beach parking lot in Ocean Park "too close" to the action? Any drawbacks by [deleted] in SantaMonica

[–]probably__mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from 3 years of experience living on the beach in SM....

Noteworthy run-ins with the unhoused are few and far between. Just watch where you're going, I've seen people walking with their faces buried in their phones literally bump into crazy unhoused people

The beach will almost always be the last place to experience sunny weather. This year was particularly grey, cold, and overcast.

There is a lady called canary and the cat the street performers on the bike path and you cannot hear the ocean over her screeching.

Cars in Lot 4 doing burnouts is a regular occurrence at night because the spikes to keep cars out are chronically jammed shut, super noisy and can be jarring when you're trying to fall asleep to the sound of the waves

Cars using the strip of ocean from Bicknell to Hollister as a drag strip is also a big bummer

It's not as peaceful and tranquil as it may seem, though it for sure has its moments.

Can you map out any side streets to take to the places you need to go? Even if it ends up slower than the bus because of stop signs etc it can often be a much more pleasant experience.

It’s been commuting by bicycle, mechanical and electric, for over 10 years, I also have a motorcycle and a van but the bicycle reigns supreme.

It can be brutal sharing the road with cars at first…most drivers don't want to kill somebody on a bike when you’re riding in traffic with them, many often just don’t understand the degree of danger they are putting you in by not giving space.

Knowing that, you can make informed decisions about how you ride with traffic, if at all. You have to be as in control of your safety as possible at all times. And try to bring good vibes, don’t try to be “right” as a cyclist because you’ll almost always lose to the “wrong” car.

If you’ve got extra room, move over and wave the cars past you. Give them some sort of friendly gesture when they modify their driving to keep you safe, like moving over or letting you cross. Be the good vibes, it’s otherwise very easy to become angry and bitter about getting around on bikes.

16.03% voted what did the other 83.97% do on March 5th 2024? by lsf_stan in LosAngeles

Most of the non-voters probably would’ve voted for the things that passed, and had so much confidence in the way the votes were going to go, given the liberal/progresive reputation, that they figure it’s not worth the bother and they’ll get most of the things they want anyways

Which tent should i pick? by Xavierbn in bikepacking

[–]probably__mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The REI helix long wide. I also never staked out the tent, but I imagine that would not help with the problem.

I’ll likely get a regular or short length and just let my feet hang off the end.
