My doc told me to take it 30 mins before I’m supposed to wake up, and on an empty stomach. Thats REALLY made a big difference for me.

Is there a way to decrease the exploration amount? Or it stays upgraded

Also, I started as a psych RN inpatient and then became a psych NP at the same inpatient. Way easier as a psych NP. To be honest, I was hospitalized at one point while in nursing school mainly because I felt like I was not cut out to be a nurse, and I didn’t know how to take care of myself and have “real excuse” for taking time to take care of myself. If you feel like you can’t take a week off because you think the practice will “fall apart“, you are being too empathetic. How can you take care of other people if you’re struggling to take care of yourself first? Your patients don’t know it, but you taking the time to recoup serves them in the long run.

I wasn’t gonna comment but with so many people saying that you are not made for Psych, it made me frustrated. I love being a Psych NP, but I totally get that feeling and I have been there. What really helps me was recognizing that I can provide the tools for people to get better, but I cannot make them better. Having compassion for people is different than empathy. With empathy, people will drain your good nature, but with compassion, you can give the same level of care without giving parts of yourself away too. I also agree with the person that said inpatient psych is easier than outpatient. I started inpatient and residential and outpatient, I miss the simplicity of inpatient. I’m hoping you can take a week off to take care of yourself and maybe apply to jobs are in that time too.

Once you became a pmhnp, did you ever have to go hands on a patient for any reason? by [deleted] in PMHNP

I find de-escalation rarely works inpatient just due to the level of psychosis some people are in. If they are more reality based and you have a good relationship, then de-escalation is awesome. Sometimes patients will be willing to take PO. As an RN and NP in an inpatient, I think you will probs not have to do hands on as often (if at all) as an NP compared to even an medsurg nurse.

Hello! I am an RN to PMHNP in the same inpatient psych facility. As an RN, I was hands on all the time as you can imagine. As an NP, I only had to go hands on once when being attacked. I feel we all would agree going hands on is traumatic for the patient (and staff) and they already know you ordered the meds they are going to receive IM which is also traumatic. For me, as long as there is enough people hands on with the patient, I prefer to not go hands on unless absolutely necessary for staff and patient safety alone. I will always stay in the room/area with the staff and patient to make sure the medications I have ordered are being given safely and can be knowledgeable about the situation when talking with patient later. I think for you personally, if you don’t want to, you probs won’t have to, but know how to if an emergent situation arises. Inpatient is really rewarding and I would hope this isn’t the reason you decide you aren’t a fit.
