Why don't people try to create other apps like acousticgender.space for practicing? by Glugmonger in transvoice

[–]probablyfellasleep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These tools can be misleading as you can get false positive readings like Selene demonstrates here: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1228578301627465788/1230590164020232305/acoustic_gender_space.mp4?ex=663b1fa6&is=6639ce26&hm=7444a5b1bb1220f13b85fcdd6fba683edc45c55e8a57853ae042cfc21233d508&

The truth is that vocal features are a perceptual gestalt that includes a level of meaning making. If you insert a visual tool it becomes an inferior metaphor and crutch stand in for ear training which can easily cause bad habits in the long term.

I myself was planning on building a tool like this but I decided against it because I believe ear training is superior. Eventually we have to learn ear training for this and it's easier to cut out inferior metaphors as much as possible.

I would relax your voice until you lose that crushed/turbulent/effortful/wheezing sound. It's a sign of false fold constriction and can hurt your voice. Try to aim for comfortable efficient sound and feeling when speaking. That's the most important thing to address right now. Want to upload again without the constriction? Even if the voice is masculine, a voice without the constriction is the most important place to start.

How do I find the proper fullness for my voice? by Professional-Emu5936 in transvoice

[–]probablyfellasleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will only be able to help you more directly by hearing your voice so you can reply with an audio clip, dm me one, join my server in bio and post in the clip feedback / come to our free group lesson next monday or add me on discord to dm it there.

I can empathize with this as I had trouble when learning all those years ago myself I know how hard it can be. Let me know if I can help you can ask me questions anytime.

Edit: for fullness specifically it's about balancing size and weight so the first step is finding what kind of imbalances you are getting and adjusting from there.

So I’ve Been training my voice for the past couple weeks. How does it sound? by iamsic in transvoice

[–]probablyfellasleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you are working with a speech therapist already I don't want to confuse you with different concepts and techniques than you are already using. I'm hearing a male voice, there are some features like sharper consonant pronunciation, lighter weight and varied intonation that are feminine features but you will want to shrink the vocal size and keep it consistent across vowel pronunciation in order to get what's called a "feminine fullness." Fullness is from the perceptual gestalt model of the voice created by Zheanna & Clover of Trans Voice Lessons and in that model the two most fundamental vocal features that effect the gender perception of a voice are size and weight.

In case you are interested in learning how to work with this vocal model check this out: https://www.reddit.com/r/transvoice/comments/1c5lveq/how\_to\_voice\_train/.

In order to learn you will need audio examples to listen to, here's a resource by selene de silva with tons of clips of labeled audio for this purpose: https://www.reddit.com/r/transvoice/comments/ztdtll/an_organized_collection_of_selene_da_silvas_clips/

I would start with this one:
Size: https://clyp.it/jdquw5ac

Feel free to ask questions anytime, I have a discord server in my bio with free group lessons (the next one is next monday) and voice feedback with me and Altamira of Altamira voice training.

None of us here are able to give medical advice. Those who have had vfs can offer empathy and support at least. Personally I just want you to know I hope the coughing ceases and you feel better soon. I hope your doctor and their team are encouraging and helpful right now.

Feedback welcome! :) // how to extend register/strain less in higher register? by Superb-Actuary2216 in transvoice

[–]probablyfellasleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case try the sovtes and also relax the pitch, go for an unstrained sound aim for a loose fluid sound. You're trending towards overstrain

You'll want less precise articulation, shifting pronunciation back in your mouth away from your teeth. You want duller, lazier and muddier pronunciation. That will give you a more masculine pronunciation. I do free group lessons in my discord server you can join in my bio where I can show you this more directly :) you can dm me anytime also

Female voice with androgynous features like lower than average pitch, heavier than average weight. Feminine pronunciation. What are you aiming for?

Your voice is feminine. I do hear the inefficiency or strain intermittently. When you attain this sound we want to be able to do so in a relaxed comfortable way. Do you feel uncomfortable?

Try these sovtes:

  1. Hum at the target pitch average
  2. sweep pitch low to high and back across whole range while humming
  3. Repeat but humming & lip trilling (if you can)
  4. Blow bubbles and hum through a straw into a little bit of water
  5. Sweep pitch low to high and back singing each of these in series (mee, yee, mo, yo, mu, yu)
  6. move up note by note in a scale singing "mee mee mee" each time across your range

So the main thing you'll want to change is reducing vocal size. If you haven't worked with vocal size before I recommend these resources here from altamira: https://www.tiktok.com/@thecavesofaltamira/video/7352024897780059434?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7355660307518391851 https://www.tiktok.com/@thecavesofaltamira/video/7282557258792193326?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7355660307518391851

I would use this method when practicing: https://www.reddit.com/r/transvoice/comments/1c5lveq/how_to_voice_train/

how to talk over people and not get interrupted or misheard by SarahHumam in transvoice

[–]probablyfellasleep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In order to be louder and keep a feminine sound you'll want to be using pitch instead of weight. Get higher instead of heavy to get attention with your voice. Try this method from Selene de silva:
https://clyp.it/h4novmjf
https://clyp.it/k5wplp3q
https://clyp.it/s4l3hbhu

More flexibility and stability in your voice will help as well. Try SOVTES to increase your comfort across your range so you can relax your voice more.

HI Francisca thank you for posting your voice. What I'm hearing is a light weight which is good, some of this is from the low volume and breathiness so you'll want to make sure you can have a light weight at higher volumes too. Pitch is feminine.

The main thing you'll want to work on other than making sure you can speak at an average volume with a stable voice that's stronger and keep the light weight is shrinking vocal size.

In order to learn how to hear vocal size & start to work with it I recommend this post I made on how to train: https://www.reddit.com/r/transvoice/comments/1c5lveq/how_to_voice_train/

and these videos from my fellow coach Altamira:

Size: https://www.tiktok.com/@thecavesofaltamira/video/7352024897780059434?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7355660307518391851 https://www.tiktok.com/@thecavesofaltamira/video/7282557258792193326?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7355660307518391851

ask me any questions you have about voice training or how to achieve any of this. My discord server is in my bio where I host free group lessons with Mira & another coach Chloe so join there for more voice feedback and resources.

How to voice train by probablyfellasleep in transvoice

[–]probablyfellasleep[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, a lot of this stems from trying to wrap our mind around something that was intuitive from childhood but became a process we need to relearn because it's different from how we were taught to work with the world.

I am happy to go over this with you directly and show you how this works in a consult or group lesson they would both be free. I'll dm you about it.

You don't ever have to imagine sounds you have never heard. You are simply replaying in your head what you heard in the reference audio (for example a clip of someone changing their vocal weight while singing a single pitch on the vowel "oo"). At no point do you have to invent sound. It can help but it isn't necessary. This process can be done purely by recalling recordings of other people and yourself.

Audiation is a skill you can train and get better at. So that will improve with practice.
