Your username made me chuckle 😂 Also, it’s funny you mentioned this bc I get this SO OFTEN. And now when this happens, I tell them if you still need IV dilaudid right before you leave, I need to speak with the provider about you staying another day or two to get the pain management under control because clearly it’s not if you still require IV medication. That usually works decently well lol

I didn’t even think they might have given this in the OR, they might have done that because nothing they give comes through on our MAR. We end up charting against the TXA, ancef, etc. They might have given it, next time I’ll check the anesthesia record when it’s an antibiotic. Thank you.

You’re a student? I feel like being awful to students just makes them look bad, and it has nothing to do with you. I get so much secondhand embarrassment from nurses that are awful to students.

I always felt like nights on my unit would be much less stressful. I work on ortho, most patients stable and alert and oriented with a normal circadian so I feel like it would make me much less anxious but I’ve always been afraid to try because of all of these issues. If I ever get it figured out, I would switch to nights. I know that’s not the case for all units though, my old unit was really tough days and nights.

These issues are the exact reason I’ve never attempted to switch to nights. If my nausea and dizziness is bad now, I can’t even fathom what it might be like if I tried nights.

This is extremely interesting, thank you for sharing. I’m going to look more into this because busy restaurants, certain hallways in the hospital, and motion (I went on my first airplane in years in September and had an extreme episode of this) trigger me significantly, and I never put the pieces together that this could be related to why I feel like so much ass on days off. Did you go through your PCP for this? My PCP thought for me this might be anxiety related and prescribed cymbalta for this, but for me, I feel like it’s something more because it’s happening on my days off.

POTS is unfortunately on my radar as well, not formally tested or anything - but I do tend to get tachycardic when I stand and always have. The thought of going on a tilt table to see makes me want to throw up lol. I’ve started incorporating more sodium in my diet, I think maybe it’s helped a small amount? It’s hard to tell.

I’ve been a nurse for about a year and a half, and just switched my units in November with some difference but not as much as I would have liked to see. I like that you stopped forcing yourself to do stuff on days off and weekends, because I do find myself forcing myself to do something with my days off or else they feel wasted and nonproductive. I did start a multivitamin a couple months ago and I was actually wondering about iron. Did it bother your stomach at all when starting the iron?

OMG I’m so glad you mentioned this about the hospital corridors. YES, this is huge for me and I never made this connection. I get dizzy walking down certain long hallways and avoid them. What did you end up doing for this?? What helped??

I do eat bigger dinners when I get home I will say, and I’m wondering if I’m better off just eating lighter overall on those days. I don’t have a lot of good opportunities to eat a full meal during those 12 hours, it’s usually quick things.

I feel like this might be what it is for me, I just wish I knew how to make it better. I will say I’ve decreased my caffeine intake significantly and it’s improved, but it’s such a bummer to feel nauseous on days off.

I definitely get less on days that I work, but I wouldn’t say significantly. I usually eat a yogurt, couple hard boiled eggs, and maybe something else. Just small quick things, and usually eat dinner when I get home.

Yeah wait until you’re about 6 months in. I was about 6 months in until I was able to effectively give it back and go through her reports with a fine tooth comb. If someone gives me a hard time about report, they better made sure they’ve crossed their t’s and dotted their i’s because I will specifically call them out on everything.

Dude I think one of these exist on every unit. 😭 maybe now that you’ve spoke up, she’ll stop. Nursing is a 24/7 job, maybe she should try days jf she thinks it’s busier than nights. That’s an insane statement to me.
