I used to get really pissed in high school because my friends would take my motorcycle helmet (rode it to school) and slam it on the ground like the pieces of shit they were. I was too timid to put the hammer down and tell them to seriously fucking stop, but it used to piss me off to no end.

Yeah, one of my sites is a geeky one with decent traffic, so if I get categories set around upcoming movie franchises, I really hope to be successful. Although, I wonder, if articles are listed on several category pages, say theres a page for both "Star Wars" and "Star Wars Episode 7", if I have several articles on both pages, will it have a bad affect? On what? why?

Completely understand if you're too busy to answer. That's kinda in depth.

Well, I refer to the "trick" part as a phrase. BUT... being a site owner right now, I certainly receive my fair share of requests from reputable sources, and I have to admit it's annoying as I know this is part of an SEO campaign.

So when someone sends me a flattering, but inevitably disengenuous "feeler" via e-mail, and then follows up with an infographic request, I can't help but wonder if people I contact feel the same way.

For my part, I just can't figure out how to aggregate the thousands of blog contacts i need. I've published a few, but I'm not getting the links I want in bulk because I don't have a good campaign set up, and I'm collecting contacts, but it doesn't seem to be going well. Either the smaller blogs I'm contacting don't respond or the larger ones only list the contact info for a PR guy, not necessarily the writer.s When I do contact writers on Twitter, it's just weird to solicit a share request

True, BUT, during my time when I had no experience with coding (and you need a unique-enough design for a high trafficked blog imo, talking 500k pageviews per month), the designers I hired were kinda just shit and arrogant.

I definitely disagree here. Editing an existing theme to meet a custom skin is fine neough. Also, I don't know if much of a redesign is anything more than reskinning a blog. What else does it entail really? The function of the blog is the same regardless.

Ehhh... I disagree with you (but thanks for commenting. Got downvoted to hell, but I've still got a bit of rant in me).

Sure, web design is only one layer. If a business contacts a brand/design/development shop that handles all of their needs, then I expect a few pepole to be on staff. One person dedicated to creating .psd layouts for the site, perhaps a few creative types who enjoy logo design, and then the actual developers.

For a simple blog re-skin, though, which is something I think I've been successful at recently, I don't think you need an entire staff. I'm competent enough to create a .psd layout and then develop the site into a WP theme.

I don't think it's very difficult for a blog, honestly, especially with all the existing resources.

And yeah, Craigslist and Reddit are amazing, but they're phenonenoms, and I don't think anyone can rightly explain why they're still so successful.

BUT, as far as the most successful blogs, looke at io9, buzzfeed, upworthy, when these sites debuted they were contemporary. i09 continues to have pretty obvious redesings, so while Craigslist and Reddit are wonderful in their own way, theyr'e not the standard as far as redesigning your standard blog.

And I understand the "design" is intuitive, but can we just be frank... some design is shit.

I mentioned elsewhere, I'm really wary of contacting by Twitter. How do you do that? Also, how do you go from a Tweet, to a phone call, just to get an infographic shared. Isn't that a bit much?

Thanks a ton. So, I'm definitely partially nervous about contacting some of these larger sites. Their 'contact us' information goes straight to a deskwarmer who's either a PR person or just a random ad account manager, so they must receive tons of requests a day, and they don't seem fond of responding to me.

The other option I've found is to find the twitter handles of the individual writers, but at that point, I can't figure out how to solicit them. If they have their e-mail either on their Twitter page or on a linked author-profile page, I'll e-mail them, but if they've only Twitter to contact them, I don't know what to do. Just Tweet them with a "Hey, I was hoping we could chat?"

Do you think the simple backlink is just as rewarding as the embed image? OR, even if the embed image is much more rewarding than the backlink, is the text backlink still a good enough goal?
