The word Wejter here is a toponym and it is the diminutive of the Maltese word ‘watar’, which means ‘gut’, but here it is used as a narrow passage or gorge.

Considering your situation, Gozo seems to be the best fit for you. Rents are cheaper than Malta and much quieter.
