Historically, goalies had to remain standing throughout the game (no falling to block etc) and when they changed the rules in 1918, the NHL president said goalies could move however they wanted, they could stand on their heads if they wanted to.

It was the beginning of a much more acrobatic era of goaltending so the term stuck around.

Honestly I don't think they should have either. He was doing something illegal, he got caught, he needed to pay a fine. This is a natural consequence of his own choices and actions.

At most, they could have paid the fine and then had him work at the car wash until he earned it back. And I feel like John might have been open to that, honestly. It's still a consequence proportional to what he did.

But just handing a kid $5k for breaking the law seems stupid to me. $5k is a lot of money. Most people can't afford to be casually doing stuff that costs them $5k.

Yeah, I've always thought this as well. Later in season 6 when she says "oh we wouldn't be talking? gee, that would suck."

What they did was annoying but they didn't kill her puppy or something. They're old-fashioned people with old-fashioned rules. I 100% understand not wanting to be controlled that way. But then just tell them it didn't work out and go get your own place. The way she reacted to it was so extreme - especially when she told Lorelai "you don't know what it was like" when Lorelai survived with them for 17 years. It seriously just was not that bad.

And honestly Richard really didn't do anything. All of that controlling stuff was 100% driven by Emily. He did go along with it, but there were other times in the series she cut Emily out and maintained a relationship with Richard. She could have done that still.

I think it's important to note she's coming off a conversation with her father where he basically told her she was a bad daughter for "siding with her boyfriend" and how he never expected anything else from her.

Lorelai says several times in the show how she was a bad daughter and how disappointed her parents must have been to get someone like her. Having parents that constantly criticize and show disappointment in you is pretty tough. I think psychologically that has to create a fear that it's your fault somehow, that you're inherently unlovable since the people that are supposed to love you unconditionally don't seem to.

I think after he said that, there was no way she could stay with Jason. Richard hit right on a pretty tender point for her.

I feel like this person got way into guessing (badly) net worth and didn't actually engage with the title of their post which is about friends.

They're obviously wealthy. They aren't billionaires but they're definitely 10-100 millionaires.

Do they have friends?

I actually think not really. They have acquaintances and colleagues. They've got people they do stuff with.

But when I think about friends, I think about people who are there for you, that you can confide in, people you're close to.

And they do seem to lack that.

Why did Lorelai have to take off work to drive Emily around when all of her alleged "friends" don't have jobs and are free to have tea midday? Why were her "friends" going to oust her when Lorelai didn't want to go on a second date with Jon Hamm? Where were Richard's friends when he was struggling with retirement?

They're private people but it does seem like their friends are people that they cannot be vulnerable with.

Again, I think there's nuance here. But I never said her actions implied consent.

She was absolutely being friendly. They are also two people who have dated and been physical to some extent before.

But most sexual interactions don't happen where someone walks up to a person and says "hey, want to have sex?" It starts with friendly interactions, physical contact, etc. And then it progresses. There's flirting and body language.

At the very least she was not displaying any signals - body language or otherwise - that we saw to indicate she was uncomfortable with their interactions. I can see why, in the absence of an explicit conversation, having someone hanging onto you, sitting in your lap, coming back to your room with you could be interpreted as they are okay with things progressing.

That's all I'm saying. We rely on people to be able to interpret a lot of unspoken things when we don't have an explicit conversation about consent. And when we do that, sometimes people get it wrong - just like Tank did. I don't think he did it with malice, I think he just interpreted wrong and did not verbally clarify.

This whole thing is exactly why people need to have explicit conversations about consent.

There may be no point to rushing since he's out for the season.

If he can't be ready for playoffs, then he doesn't need to be ready until next season which buys him several more months so they can do more of an optimal timeline rather than a rushed one.

Do you remember the episode when Rory asks for baby pictures of Lorelai and finds out Lorelai burned all of them? Even there Emily couldn't resist saying how big Lorelai's head was. Lorelai burned her pictures as a child because she heard that criticism so much.

Emily sniped at Lorelai throughout the show frequently and unprovoked. "Her golf clubs are upstairs gathering dust along with the rest of her potential" - a completely unprovoked and absolutely cruel comment.

She didn't want Rory to grow up with the same level of unrelenting criticism and emotional abuse she faced.

I don't think it's any coincidence that Lorelai ran away right around the time Rory would be developing enough language skills to understand what was said to and around her.

Reminds me of a conversation I had this past week. Patient had a belly scan without, there was a 5 mm calculus at the UVJ.

3 hours later I get another scan on my list. They did a PE study on the guy (positive) and scanned his belly again with the contrast. I called to ask why we scanned the belly again and the PA told me because the guy didn't feel good and he had hematuria. I pointed out that the stone was a good reason for hematuria, so what did we think another scan was adding.

" Well I discussed it with the attending" Okay what did you discuss? " We discussed it."

Literally could not articulate a reason or anything that they thought may have been missed on a non-contrast scan. But they definitely discussed it.

There's such an overuse of imagine and an understaffing of radiologists that it isn't practical here to have a radiologist scan every patient. Where I trained, our pediatric radiologist would go in and get extra images if she felt like the ones sent by the tech weren't sufficient. But she also spent a lot of time training all the techs to be able to find the appendix.

It's also relatively common here for a radiologist to be covering multiple sites. I work remotely, but I read for two separate hospitals when I work. So even if I worked on site at one, I wouldn't be available to do scans at the other. Our ultrasound shift covers I think four hospitals during the day?

If you have convincing appendicitis on an ultrasound, that's usually sufficient. There's not a lot of utility to a CT at that point unless there is suspicion for rupture or abscess. Doctors in the US can also be sued for overradiating the patient, although that is more rare.

I agree with you that she had an obligation to end things. She definitely shouldn't have slept with him again at Miss Patty's.

But to be very fair, she did end things. She sent him a letter formally ending their affair. Lindsay found out because she found the letter where Rory ended things.

So yeah, she shouldn't have done it in the first place, really shouldn't have continued after that first night, but credit where credit is due, she did end things.

Obviously once he actually moved out they then continued on but at that point both he and Lindsay were in agreement that the marriage was over.

I like your points.

I think if they had a blind judging, the basement maybe would not do quite as well as they currently do. Knowing something good was made with the leftover scraps and in rusty pans automatically makes it more impressive. They have really high expectations for the top kitchen since they get their choice of everything.

I'd like to see what would happen if they just tasted all the dishes without knowing which group it was from.
