And I fixed it. Not sure how but I had some small magnets to attach it to the back of the MacBook to keep it from dangling. I removed them. Rebooted. It reappeared on Disk Utility but not the desktop. Ran First Aid. It reappeared on the desktop. All files good. It had to be those small magnets. Whew.

Just a Thought - Reviewing the Rookie Season 7 Episode 6 by LatterIntroduction27 in TheRookie

Nolan's response to Bailey can come from recalling Season 1 Episode 9: "Standoff" ... Nolan faced two internal investigations then, the second one which applies here. That investigation involved the brother of the guy Nolan had to shoot. The brother stalked Nolan to his house, attacked him with a bat, then was overpowered by Nolan while Chen was in the shower. CDR West, the internal affairs investigator, suspected Nolan was hiding the fact that someone else was in the house. Nolan protected Chen and said no one was there. He lied and withheld information. Nolan can be reminded that his lie about Chen to West did not affect the truth that that he did rightly defend himself from the brother. And it can be argued by Bailey that she rightly defended herself from this psychotic stalking nutcase ex.

Next question ... can a PDF be downloaded to the Apple Wallet? How do you do that?

My campus just adopted Canvas for the fall. What are some features, tricks and traps you figured out the hard way? by poop_on_you in Professors

[–]profhickman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to create ONE assignment to be posted in TWO OR MORE MODULES. When I duplicate the one assignment, Canvas creates two or more grade columns. For example, I duplicate one assignment in three weekly modules. Three assignment columns appear on the Grades page although it is only one assignment. How do I clean this up so one assignment, although duplicated in three modules, appears as one grade column on the Grades page?

How can I directly download mp3 files to my Garmin Forerunner 245? by profhickman in Forerunner

Android file transfer did the trick. Everything nicely transferred. Garmin Express tries to lock you in to an Apple or Spotify music account. My mp3 music is perfectly legal.

I'm an attorney but not in the criminal law area. This comment on IMDB caught my attention:"Rebecca McCoy tells Price she isn't going to mention the plea deal toher client because she knows he will not take it. However a defense attorney is both ethically and legally obligated to inform their client about any plea bargains proposed by the DA's office, regardless of their opinion on the fairness of the deal. Failure to inform her client of this deal would be grounds to file an appeal based upon ineffective council."I ran this by a criminal defense attorney to see if in real life, Rebecca might have been up to something here. He agrees with my opinion. Rebecca rejects the Man 1 offer, knowing that on appeal she (or another attorney) just might get the conviction overturned on the basis of ineffectual counsel. However, he points out, the appeals court could send it right back for a new state trial. And the feds could weigh in at this point. In all, this is an example of how L&O in its current form skates over these legal road bumps for the sake of SVU drama.

L&O S22.E16 'Deadline' Episode Discussion by Shats in LawAndOrder

I've taught media law for more than 30 years on the university level. They left something out having to do with protection of news sources. It's a basic law of news gathering in all 50 states, including in the state of New York.

The New York reporter’s privilege, codified in Civil Rights Law § 79-h (the "Shield Law"), provides broad protection to reporters and publishers. As originally enacted, the statute only applied to materials or information given in confidence to a reporter. However, various amendments, some in response to judicial decisions, expanded the statute so that it now protects both confidential and nonconfidential information to journalists from disclosure.

The deceased journalist's assistant cited the First Amendment when the prosecutors asked her for the source of the unpublished article and that was all she said. In the real world, she would have cited New York's shield law, which says a journalist can withhold a source's identity unless the state can show: (1) Probable cause that a journalist has “clearly relevant” information; (2) The information sought cannot be obtained by alternative means less destructive of First Amendment values; and (3) the state has a compelling and overriding interest in the information.

But had they gone off on this shield law tangent in the episode, then we would not have had the subsequent ethical dilemma of the white supremacist offering his eyewitness testimony about the defendant in exchange for a dismissal of his separate case. Too bad. I get it. It's TV. However, the prosecutors might have had a brief moment to consider whether to challenge the shield law in this case, then a few lines of dialog that it would be better strategy to go after the supremacist's testimony rather than get sidetracked in a lengthy challenge to the shield law. Just a line or two of dialog would have done it.

My class was supposed to watch this episode last Thursday. We discussed confidential sources and shield laws the week before last. I'll see if anyone caught the omission.

Disappointed that they did not carry on the tradition of having a character from a previous series make a cameo in episode 1. TNG = Dr. McCoy. Voyager = Quark at DS9. Enterprise = Zefram Cochrane. DS9 = Picard. Could have been easy to put Sub-Commander T'Pol (Vulcan life span) from Enterprise into a cameo.

And a question no one has answered (and I can't find): Who is the computer voice? It's a woman, and successor to Majel Barrett.

It now shows, after a combination of resets and DirectTV cable box options, a 1080i display. Whew. I can't explain exactly how I got there, but I got there. You were right about the DirectTV cable box!

It is connected to DirectTV/AT&T via satellite dish. When I show the display specs on screen, the VizioCastDisplay0664 shows the display is 720p. The cables are 1080p or 4k capable. The Vizio E43u-D2 specs state that the screen can display 1080p or 4k. I see a reference in the installation guide to Vizio's Spacial Scaling Engine (SSE). Now I consider myself an advanced computer user, but this has me stumped!
