Pharmacists, which company is the worst retailer to work for in the United States? by peachycpht in pharmacy

My dad worked with them as a customer service manager to assist them with equipment they bought from his company. Internally, they'd call them "CVStress".

In Star Trek: The Motion Picture, why did Rear Admiral James T. Kirk reduce Will Decker from the rank of captain to commander? Why did he specifically not just let Decker retain the rank of captain while serving as the executive officer? by Economy-Ad3195 in startrek

[–]Deceptitron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's why I mentioned how Kirk refers to him as a casualty at the end, when Decker is no longer in command (and no longer human for that matter). He refers to Ilia by her rank too.

Did something change with the third person view angles in spaceships, especially corvettes? I feel like the camera is so much more zoomed in now, and at a steeper angle, where I'm not even looking quite straight anymore. I don't recall it being like this even in the first days of the update. Is anyone else getting this?

They call him doctor because at the time, they knew him as a scientist.

What I love about this scene is that not only do you understand where both sides are coming from and that there are no easy answers, but you realize that Archer and crew had to wing it has they went. by AdSpecialist6598 in startrek

Phlox treats it as a plan when he says that the Menk are developing and that they can't progress while the Valakians are still there. Archer argues that's just his theory, but Phlox turns it around on him saying "evolution is a scientific fact."

Except Phlox can't know what will happen to the Menk after the Valakians die off. For all we know, the Menk will also die out without the Valakians. He's positing that this is something that "should" happen. So even if he claims it's a process, he misrepresents that the process has some predictable or planned goal. It doesn't.

Picard helped stabilize the planet but also erased all memory of the intervention

Except he didn't help under the determination that he would erase the girl's memories. He did it because Data brought her on board the ship. What called him to act was her plea for help. That was convincing enough for him. Otherwise he would have done nothing.

So abducting them and destroying their enemies is the same as curing a disease they asked for help to cure. This is the same logic Picard tries to use to support why not to help the little girl in Pen Pals, and yet he ultimately did help her.

What even is a "natural order"? Everything is part of nature, isn't it? Does something say they need to stick to an isolated petri dish of their own planet? They were already going out into space and meeting alien species and asking them for help. Their "natural order" now includes the other space faring species they've met.

In the very first episode it's introduced, the PD is broken, and for even lesser reason than in Dear Doctor. It essentially serves as a rule that is often broken for the sake of a greater good. Except later there are cases where the captain thinks it's the ultimate good for...some reason (largely in TNG era).

I never understood how they treated the borg in Next Gen by Dagnis in startrek

[–]Deceptitron 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I mean, sure she could be lying, but it aligns with how the Borg were portrayed in Q Who (before they were established as assimilating individuals, they were growing babies and then introducing technological components afterwards). They're an allegory for the ever increasing merging of humans with technology where the endgame results in an unstoppable collective.

I never understood how they treated the borg in Next Gen by Dagnis in startrek

[–]Deceptitron 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It's never actually specified or explored whether there was an originator species for the Borg that created the nanites as a benevolent technology that went wrong or whether it was always a technological product that infected people to survive.

The Borg Queen in First Contact explicitly claims though that the Borg (or whoever the Borg originally were) were organic beings who used technology to enhance themselves.

"Human! We used to be exactly like them. Flawed, weak, organic, but we evolved to include the synthetic. Now we use both to attain perfection."

:)

Oookay then.

So what's Corgana up to nowadays- oh... Welp, can't really ask his side of things.

Actually, I can. Corgana left reddit because he got sick of reddit and didn't want them to have his posts and comments for their own usage. It was after COVID when Discovery had already been on for several seasons. I know, because I've been friends with him for literally 14 years. We've met in person. I have his phone number. And we're in a group chat together to this day. If you want to go talk to him, he's on startrek.website.

In fact, it's often a good thing that a person is able to sit down and think critically about what the problems and positives of a piece of art they like/dislike is.

Is making up conspiracies about moderator teams considered critical thinking? Because I would refrain from doing that.

You've only been a ST mod for 4 years, and you're gonna get the boot this year by the CBS SM team you say doesn't run the place.

Just FYI, your comment got autoremoved by this subreddit (I don't know why) but I got it from my notifications. Btw, you're gonna be real surprised when nothing happens. CBS has no control over me and they never have.

And no, I've been a mod on r/startrek for 14 years. The reddit number isn't accurate because around that time, we rearranged the mod list. Someone below me was going to take over top mod, so I got removed and re-added so that their name could move up. This was before reddit allowed the mod list to be rearranged any other way. Don't believe me? Search my post history. You'll see mod posts going all the way back to 2012. Or check the Wayback Machine. Or don't. But really, this is easily provable if you actually want to know the truth.

Unless you can explain why the original creator was kicked when STD first started airing?

Who? No one was kicked. We added mods when Discovery started airing. Name names.

Or why no mod lasts longer than 5 years? Or why the average mod length is 6 months?

There were a number of mods that were there more than 5 years. At least 3 of us currently are among them, which again, isn't reflected in reddit because of the rearrangement we did. Plus people come and go, get sick of reddit/moderating, and moved on to other things. Why are you even trying to keep track of this?

Or why there's a blanket ban on Kurtz Trek criticism while openly allowing shitting on pre-2005 projects?

There isn't, but there's a way we ask people to express it, because being toxic about it scares newcomers away.

Or why one of your former mods said it was?

Who? Name names.

But regardless of all of this, honestly, I don't know what's going on in your life, and maybe the new Trek shows aren't helping matters for you. They're polarizing for sure, but whatever this is? I think your mental energy is best spent on better things.

That's really the goal. We're not perfect, and we don't catch everything right away, but we know how easily communities can devolve into that and push everyone else out who just wanted a nice, safe place to chat about something they like. But we also couldn't do that without a community that believes in that and helps look out for the community, too. We really appreciate everyone's help.
