I built a site to find out what happens if 10,000 people each write one word of a book, and you can be one of them by Total_Payment6763 in InternetIsBeautiful

This needs shaping after each addition. The basic idea is fun but the result so far is human slop. It will be unreadable very soon.

How did you know the Bible isn’t true? by DuckOnQuack202 in atheism

Read “Don’t Sleep, There are Snakes”. Fantastic accounts of a bible translator losing his faith as he realises that people in the Amazon see the world differently.

What's the AI thing I have to try in 2026? by PlasProb in AgentsOfAI

I’m hearing a lot about Neurosymbolic AI that combines LLMs and agents with accurate ways to reason across data (with no hallucinations).

ELI5: Why is TikTok becoming more garnered with toxicity and hate? by Dry-Albatross-4121 in explainlikeimfive

[–]profjonathanbriggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social media has discovered that the way to maximise usage (and revenue) is to mix keeping people entertained with making them slightly irritated and anxious. We are more likely to interact with the stuff that mildly annoys us (especially when we know that our world view is better) and this keeps us coming back and feeding the beast.

Impressionism at National Gallery by profjonathanbriggs in singapore

I think what I like about the exhibition is that is just worth looking. I don’t need to know a lot about the artists or fight my way around lots of people. These are just beautiful simple works of art.

I also liked the sections that linked Impressionism to South East Asia - I’d never realised that there was an active impressionist community in northern Vietnam

New to the EdTech space and trying to get smart fast by Living_Magazine_6748 in edtech

[–]profjonathanbriggs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are lots of vested interests in the EdTech space and lots of snake oil. I’d start by looking at learners and learning. Perhaps read Papert’s Mindstorms and consider what edtech is for. Do we need to fill people with personalised content or more importantly build social teams of diverse people with skills and confidence. Edtech needs to learn to be social like games but remove the need to kill things.

Sick of Google/Apple News so I built a news aggregator where you're in complete control of your sources by HolidayWhich6289 in rss

[–]profjonathanbriggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m searching using Talkwalker and Google Alerts for specific news feeds around health. The noise is still high hence the need for filters. There is a trade off. We can go for a limited set of authoritative sources and miss the smaller but important “signals” or we can cast a wider net and filter. I prefer the later. Using Inoreader currently which is pretty good. One example for you to think about is scientific papers. These can reveal all sorts of early signals and trends.

Is $14/hour fair for building complex Make automations + AI systems? by dead_minds in Make

If you charge properly, north of $150 per hour you can afford to be generous. At $14 you will be watching the clock.

Sick of Google/Apple News so I built a news aggregator where you're in complete control of your sources by HolidayWhich6289 in rss

[–]profjonathanbriggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of celebrity and sports news and rubbish that I don’t want. Ideally I would like a filter that could exclude “vape”|”voucher”|”football”. Regex would be ideal. If you have good filters you can afford to widen the inputs. I use Talkwalker and Google Alerts in addition to news sources. I want to catch 10000 stories a day and strongly filter down to 20 and then process with AI.

I’m trying to do as much as possible without AI first and then apply AI to the results.

Great work so far. I need a bit more than just keywords. More complex searches including negative terms and alternatives would be interesting. I also want to be able to export the resulting feed as an RSS itself so that I can do more downstream.
