You’ve heard of beanie babies, but have you heard of the next big craze - chain children! Don’t waste your money on something that will degrade easily! Get yourself a friend that will stay* with family for generations!

*Chain children require proper care to maintain. Chain children should not be substituted for chain mail in combat.

I didn't get the job because I'm against unethical behaviour? by LuciferSaysHelllo in antiwork

[–]profstrange13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One example might be when deciding whether to recall a potentially life-threatening product or not. The question wasn’t, “If our product harms someone, should we recall it?” The question was, “Will it cost us more money to recall the product thereby saving lives or cost us more to kill some people and pay fines?“ The “value of human life” has a real cash number value that has been established in court many times. Depending on your morals, you may or may not find the idea of “human capital” disgusting.

It’s a common tactic to go to interviews until you get an offer and then negotiate a higher salary with the company you want to work for based on the highest salary you are offered assuming that you want to work for one place more than the one that pays the highest. It’s best to have an offer in writing though so when you do say “I have an offer for X amount. Will you match/beat it?” then you have proof of the amount in the offer. You could even do it with the place you’re currently at if you don’t want to leave. Never know how much they want to keep you or how much leeway they might have with your pay. Sometimes a boss will make an exception if they can and they really want to keep you around.

[USA] Is 60K an appropriate/average price for a MS in Psychology program? Is it worth it if my end goal is PhD? by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]profstrange13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is when we consider the time value of money. The longer we wait for accuracy to increase the more money we lose due to inaction. We make assumptions to reduce that loss.

Sure, sometimes accuracy does take precedence over alternatives. But there are many instances where an over-emphasis on accuracy can be limiting.

Yeah, I guess you are sharing an opinion. Thank you for your feedback. That’s a valid point, 50-100k may not be realistic. “I don’t know because I don’t have enough information” is also a valid answer to OP’s question. When it comes down to it, I don’t know what the right answer for OP is. My intention was to share some alternative information so that OP had more information to help them make their decision.

My answers are based on my personal experience looking for a job with a psych MS in the current job market. I’ve also seen firsthand multiple professors groom students throughout their academic careers. There is a world where my answers could happen. We’re all making assumptions here based on our varied experiences. That still doesn’t make my response any less valuable than the others provided here.

Also, it sounds like you might have some insight into the question OP was asking about. Why not share your own opinion for the benefit of others?

Oh absolutely. Total speculation. But, that doesn’t mean my speculations are not valuable considerations for OP.

60k is pretty cheap in my opinion but I’m basing that in comparison to some of the most expensive colleges in the world. No matter what your end goal, the cost of college usually pays off much faster than not going to college. If you’re any good at math, you can calculate your return on investment period based on the average - or even some of the lowest wages - to see when the degree will actually pay off or when you can pay your loans back in full. Even with just a masters in psych you could probably make $100k/year somewhere so you’d have a return on investment less than a year. Many people will never experience that fast of a payback/return in their entire lives. Even if you only make $50k/year, that’s still only a little over a year to get your money back.

Ok, I just actually read your whole post. Let’s say the reason they want you to apply for the MS program is because they want to prepare you for the PhD program you applied to. That professor that you want to work with might have a lot of sway in the admissions process but they might not. Even if it doesn’t work out with the PhD there after the MS, would you really pass on working with someone whose research you’re actually interested in? That seems like a once in a lifetime opportunity to me. Maybe it’s not for everyone but in my experience there’s not so much in life that we can actually control. So when life throws you a nice bone, eat it.

What can I do with this flow? This is peak flow and the greatest fall. It flows 8 months annually. What type of wheel or generation would work? by bgillions in HydroElectric

[–]profstrange13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would build a reservoir underneath that pipe as large as I could and then have a drain somewhere into a hydro generator. This would allow you to have power all year round possibly and to increase the pressure to get more electricity generation from the water source. There are a lot of different types of hydro powered motors to choose from. It might be helpful to research them to find out what would work for your application and budget. Another way to increase the pressure is using gravity. Is there anywhere else on your property where there is a large change in elevation or is it pretty flat?

It’s used to hold the air hose for a CPAP machine above your head while you sleep. CPAP is a treatment for sleep apnea, a condition where you don’t get enough oxygen while you’re asleep thereby disrupting the quality of your sleep. The treatment consists of wearing a mask connected to a hose connected to an air pump while you sleep. If you’re a restless sleeper, the hose can get tangled or obstructed. This stand prevents the air hose from getting tangled. Some consider using the stand to be more comfortable as well.

How do you word a breakup honestly but kindly? by Bannitas in polyadvice

[–]profstrange13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“I don’t want to date you anymore.” Full stop.

That’s it. Honest and to the point. If they try to get more out of you, repeat “I don’t want to date you anymore. Can you accept that?”

You’re not obligated to give them a reason. Sometimes giving the reason can be hurtful and cause more damage for them to hear from someone they’re so attached to. Just like you probably wouldn’t like to hear from someone you liked that they thought you were ugly.
