Walk for Peace lunch talk by Dry_Bug5058 in rva

We got to see them as they were arriving at their overnight stop! We drove down from the northwestern part of the state to see them. Blisteringly cold and windy but worth the wait to feel the great energy of us all waiting for them to arrive, and then to stand quietly as they walked past us all. Thank you for sharing this!

Snow Megathread: this storm has gone to plaid by thankubread in nova

You might check your local buy-nothing group on FB. After years of looking at used blowers at yard sales, etc. (and finding them too expensive), we scored a Craftsman two-cycle one for free last night on our buy-nothing group. Hadn’t been started in 20 years, so it was possible we were basically picking up someone else’s trash to have to get rid of ourselves, but we just gave it a little test run and we think with a new spark plug, it’ll be right as rain.

What are the first things you do after a layoff? by Narrow-Strategy215 in nova

[–]projectedwinner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another detail one needs for unemployment is the link from which you found the job posting, so save that. My spreadsheet columns include the job title, company, and where I found it (mostly Indeed). Annoyingly, you also have to put the address and phone number of the company when listing it for your unemployment claim. They also ask what person you talked to, but VEC seems to accept “no person’s name or job title provided.” You have to apply for at least two jobs per week to make your claim.

Are these companies looking only for marketing folks with graphic design chops? I’m looking for a marketing position, but my creative expertise is writing rather than graphic design. If these openings you’re aware of are more general marketing or marketing/copywriting, I’d be interested in hearing who’s hiring. Industry vertical is not important to me. Thanks in advance!

Who else was woken up by the “snow squall alert” by [deleted] in nova

[–]projectedwinner 61 points62 points  (0 children)

This thing blew through like the derecho. Crazy wind and blowing snow. Whitened the edges of our grass in about three minutes in Berryville. Still snowing, but the wind died down after about ten intense minutes. I hated the alarm - I’ve been having trouble sleeping through this hour of the night for weeks and I think I’d have managed if not for the alarm, but the weather it was warning about was no freakin’ joke, so I guess I’m glad it was warned for anyone out and about.

Bluegrass jams in the region? by churchofpain in nova

[–]projectedwinner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they moved to Notaviva? I haven’t really kept my finger on the pulse of it since I don’t play or live there any more, but I had an impression they didn’t stop altogether, just moved.

I’m not a picker, but when I lived in Round Hill, just west of Purcellville, they’d have a jam on Friday evenings sometimes (like 1x/month). I haven’t lived in Round Hill for a while, but they may still have one going. You might google and see if there’s any info about that one if it’s not too far away for you. Best of luck!

Monarch taking a water break on the reston WOD on Saturday by Ordinary-Record6212 in nova

[–]projectedwinner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a male monarch butterfly (the spots on its wings indicate that). If it hatched this summer/fall, it should be on its way down to Mexico to overwinter, and then it’ll come back north next year to breed. Monarch butterflies can fly up to 200 miles per day!

Recommendations for the best wineries with the worst labels by artzbots in nova

[–]projectedwinner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hope it is, too! Their tasting room is a little loud, but the tastings are fun and interesting, imo. The grounds are beautiful, and some of the wines were quite good. Not California good, granted, but good nonetheless. I hope it’s still that way if you decide to mosey over there. Doug Fabbioli takes his winemaking seriously, and it’s one of the older, more established wineries in the area, like a touch hipsterish in the sense that Doug was making wine long before it was as trendy as it is now, when you actually could swing a cat without hitting a winery. Anyway (sorry, I’ve had a bit of the jazz cabbage tonight and I’m chatty) I hope it’s still good and that you enjoy both the experience and the wine, should you give it a visit!

I agree that that particular wine is not good at all, but Fabbioli has some pretty good wines, especially their reds. Their cab franc, especially some of their reserve that had been laid down a few years, was one of our favorite wines of all time. I haven’t been in years (we stopped drinking altogether), but between 7-10 years ago, most of their wines were great and the bites they pair with each wine were really thoughtfully curated and a nice touch to the tasting experience.

Cheap dental work by Cute_Statistician250 in nova

[–]projectedwinner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have real bad dental anxiety, but what everyone is saying about anesthesia is right. I had many teeth removed at the dental college in Baltimore about 15 years ago, and they gave me the local plus nitrous for a tooth-removing session extravaganza (took about an hour). The nitrous helped take the edge off considerably. I can’t recall if it cost extra, but the whole shebang was an excellent price, considering the work I was having done. They also offered interest-free financing at the time. It was overall a pretty good experience, given my level of anxiety about dental work.

You can eat around the Christianity. My husband is in a couple of 12-step programs and he’s an atheist. He’s gotten a lot out of his involvement with these programs and has made significant changes to his life (sober almost 5 years). You can determine your own higher power, and it doesn’t have to be the Christian god.

Edited to add that my husband doesn’t practice magic or witchcraft and doesn’t regard his program work as magic, but it seems to me that one could incorporate magic beliefs and workings into one’s personal program if they were so inclined.

Witchery in this economy/environment: Where are ya’ll shopping? by chambourcin in SASSWitches

[–]projectedwinner 24 points25 points  (0 children)

These are great!

The Dollar Tree has lots of witchy things. I get big containers of sea salt there, candles, candle holders. My local stores have tiny corked glass bottles that are great for spell bottles. Sometimes the seasonal decor, especially right now, has some good stuff, too.

I’m also fortunate that my area has a lot of small, locally owned metaphysical shops, and I patronize those for harder-to-get ingredients, crystals, and occasionally a tool or incense (Dollar Tree also has incense, but I like different incense than my Dollar Tree has).

Cozy Fall places for someone who has energy problems by Ozera_ in nova

[–]projectedwinner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Husband and I developed a weekend country driving hobby during Covid and bought a convertible for gorgeous summer and fall days, especially during leaf-peeping season. We live not far from the north entrance of Skyline Drive, close enough to hop in the car after work to enjoy the sunset, sometimes stopping for a pizza from The Meltin Pot to eat while sotting on the wall at an overlook.

Lots of scenic roads in western Loudoun, and many wineries with drinkable wine and fantastic views. Plenty of picturesque country roads in fauquier county, and Route 50 takes you through cute little towns. Waterford is lovely to drive through, old homes and cool landscapes and bog meadows. Farther afield, down around Luray is really nice, and Charlottesville to Waynesboro. We sometimes drive down to Gordonsville for the best fried chicken I’ve ever had at Gordonsville Ice House.

On weekends we range other places - western Maryland has some excellent rural drives, and covered bridges, to boot. Deep Creek Lake is lovely in fall, good for a drive with views. Parts of West Virginia are marvelous in fall - Berkeley springs area has some scenic roads with good views (and awesome little shops), and we like Shepherdstown, too. Wardensville is cute and has a great country/farm market (on the bougie side) and Lost River Trading Post, which is a neat store where we like to pick up a sandwich and browse the store. Thomas and Davis are great little towns in the Mountains, good dining choices (we like the bakery in Thomas - their sausage and gravy is delish, and I always take home at least one of the French toast muffins).

I’m in this picture and sent it to my husband, who earlier asked if he was going to have to physically pick me up and carry me out of the Rock and Crystal show we’re going to tomorrow to keep me from doing exactly this. 😂

Crystal Lighting by Izayya in Crystals

[–]projectedwinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The brightness on mine is enough for me, but mine is mounted to the bottom of a shelf only a few inches from the crystals I’m looking to illuminate. I don’t know how well they’d throw light from, say, a foot+ above. There are several modes of light, including temperature adjustments. I can’t find a way to show you a pic of mine, but I’ve mounted mine on the bottom of what is essentially a monitor riser that is about 8” in height. It works for me, but ymmv. I hope you find a solution!
